Texas Senior Games: Catcher Analysis

On August 17th, the PBR Texas staff made the trip to Prestonwood Christian Academy for the Senior Games. Immediately following the event, we published our Quick Hits and Statistical Analysis posts, but the next week is reserved for our position-by-position analysis. 

Today, we’re starting with the catchers – a group of eight listed below. Keep an eye out for tomorrow when we break down the day’s outfielders, too.

All Prospects (listed alphabetically)

2020 C Alex Adauto (The Colony HS) 
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Adauto had a strong lower half with an exit velocity up to 92 from the tee. Also showed some pull side power with natural lift during BP. Adauto ran a 7.63 60-yard dash. From behind the plate had a quiet setup,a pop time of 2.23 and was 74 mph to 2B.  

2020 C Noah Boughton (Covenant Christian)
6-foot, 185-pounds, Left-handed swing with small leg kick, has a flat stroke with feel for the barrell. From behind the plate, worked well with pitchers, hands work well in transfer, makes throws down to 2B at 76 mph, and showed a pop time of 2.10. Also ran a 7.53 60-yard dash.

2020 C Jackson Duke (South Grand Prairie HS)
Southern Arkansas commit. 6-foot, 210-pound right-handed hitting catcher. He ran a 7.60 60-yard dash. Powerful right-handed swing, simple set up, fast hands, up to 94 mph exit velocity off the tee. Quick actions behind the dish. 75 mph down to 2B, pop time of 2.10.

2020 C Brady Hernandez (Lake Highlands HS)
Hernandez stands 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, physical frame. Easy power from right-handed swing, got extension through the ball. Up to 90 mph exit velocity off the tee. Consistent throws from behind the plate, throws stayed on line at 75 mph with 2.15 pop time.  Ran a 7.81 60-yard dash.

2020 C Jimmy Hutson (Prosper HS)
A physical 6-foot, 220-pound frame showed a powerful right handed swing with natural lift and pull side power. Hutson was up to 91 mph exit velocity from the right side and was 78 mph from behind the dish with a 2.21 pop time. He ran an 8.09 60-yard dash

2020 C/RHP Weston Peninger (Flower Mound HS)
High-waisted 6-foot-4, 180-pound frame, Peninger ran a 7.49 60-yard dash, Stood tall in setup at the plate, has a flat barrel through the zone, up to 88 mph exit velocity. Work behind the plate was sound, feet moved well, accurate with throws at 77 mph and 2.06 pop time. On the mound Peninger throws from a low ¾ slot and creates some angles to the plate. Fastball was 80-82 with arm-side run, showed curveball at 68-70, and a 72 mph changeup.

2020 C/RHP Trey Vento (Harlingen South HS)
5-foot-10, 215-pounds, was up to 90 mph in his exit velocity off the tee, and was consistent at 74 mph with 2.16 pop time from behind the plate. Also ran a 8.47 60-yard dash. On the mound he was 78-80 mph with his fastball, showing a 67-69 mph curveball and a 68-69 mph slider from multiple different slots.  

2020 C Zachary Vetal (Plano Senior HS)
The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Vetal had a balanced set up at the plate, with a flat stroke producing backspin linedrives, was also 82 mph on the exit velocity test off the tee. His hands and feet worked well together behind the plate. Pop time of 2.08 and 74 mph down to 2B. He also ran a 7.62 60-yard dash. .
