2022 Uncommitted Spotlight: 3B/RHP-Jackson Hollingshaus

Jeff Scholzen
Utah Scouting Director

We take a look at Jackson Hollingshaus that, for all tenses, should be committed and this player finished off a very good summer with an impressive showing at the PBR West Coast Games. This past weekend, another showing was even better. Hollingshaus was 4-8 from the plate and helped his own cause from the mound with an RBI single in 1-0 victory over Arizona Sandlot. Not only did Jack’s drive in the run, he also pitched a complete game one hit SHO scattering 5 walks with 8 K’s.

2022 Jackson Hollingshaus, 3B/RHP, R-R (Maple Mountain HS) who moved to the Beehive State from CA before his junior year to play at Maple Mountain, which is just south of the Provo, UT metro area. “Jax” plays for a new head coach in longtime college pitching coach Jeremy Thomas. Coach Thomas spent 12 years at the D2/D1 level on Mike Littlewood’s staff at Dixie State U and BYU. Coach Thomas will most definitely be a huge influence on the development of Hollingshaus as he looks to be the leader of a talented HS team. I have a long history with Coach Thomas as a player and as a coach. I signed Coach Thomas to his professional playing contract back in 1999. In speaking with Coach Thomas, he indicated that Jackson is the first player to the field and last to leave. He’s also shown up to the weight room and Hollingshaus is already in the gym before the rest of his teammates get their workout in.

I’ve also coached Jackson recently in the West Coast Games and seen him on a couple of other occasions at the PBR Utah Select tourney and the Utah Valley prospect camp. In all my looks Hollingshaus has performed! He’s an engaging young man with a smile on his face and shows considerable passion for the game and is a really good teammate and a coach's dream for other players to follow. Hollingshaus was also most recently featured in a “Coffee and Curveballs” segment with Nathan Rode and VP of Scouting Shooter Hunt, as a player who stood out from the Beehive state at the West Coast Games.

Hollingshaus’ profile, scouting reports, videos

and metrics are featured below. He would be a very good “get” for some team and has impact type ability with the bat and arm. Jackson is like getting a two for one type player with his talent! Coaches reach out if you have any questions about this young man with leadership qualities!

Scouting Report

8/15/21

A West Coast Games participant, he was also invited to the Top Prospect Games in July, and was a “State Games” invite in NorCal in 2020, before moving from CA to Utah. Also had the chance to see Jackson at a college prospect camp this past Saturday as he stung a couple of balls, with one off the top of the LF wall for a 2B. At the West Coast Games, Hollingshaus put up a Team Utah best 100.2 EV and stung balls from the middle to pull side of the field. He took a really good BP and hit in the 3 hole over the weekend. Jackson had some good swings in the West Coast Games, as he had 3-4 hits, with a couple of doubles deep to the pull side and showed the ability to hit upper 80’s velo that was on display. On the mound there is some intrigue from some schools with his FB 83-86, that with a few tweaks out front to get better extension, that upper 80’s is in there moving forward. A K thrower that is more of a finesse RH;er that can sink the ball, cut it and throws an array of secondary offerings in mixing and matching as a pitch-ability type. Has a new head coach at his HS in Jeremy Thomas, a former MiLB pitcher and former pitching coach at Dixie State and BYU, that will be an influence in developing his arsenal on the mound over this coming off season and into next spring. Gaining some steam with a couple of schools and I see more on the horizon as he continues to perform and his name circulates.

6/19/21

He moved in from NorCal and played this spring in his new home state of Utah. A surprise that was good to see. A smooth, comfortable high kick to delivery with an EZ arm and the FB 81-86 worked at 84-86 with tailing life with reports of 89 from those in CA. The CB 68-72 is a bit soft now, but with his new coach in Jeremy Thomas (former pro pitcher and pitching coach at Dixie State and BYU) there’s definitely more in there to tap from. I can see where the velocity could be higher? A strong lean athletic body, and one that can still add some weight and gain added strength with maturity. Jackson should be an arm to most definitely follow this summer and into the fall.

8/17/19

PBR CA STATE GAMES - Long, medium frame with space for added girth and muscle to the lean and wiry frame; some current strength in the upper half. Flashed two-way skills all weekend looking ready to make some jumps. At the plate keeps hands high at back shoulder staying balanced with slight lift of hands back; allows barrel to work upwards through the zone and flashing quickness in the bat. Strong rotations and the ability to square the baseball up; hit a 3B on Sunday where he lasered the ball over the CF head and showed the type of extra-base power available while also being right on a lot of pitches all weekend. Athleticism is present easily going 1st-3rd and getting out of the box well. Carries over to 3rd base where he has some bounce in his step and ability to range through 6-hole; can keep improving spacing and understanding when to push his range. Arm is an asset with easy actions working across the diamond from 3rd. On the hill went two innings striking out 1, giving up two hits and walking two. Hands lift with gradual high front knee lift but showing flexibility in the hips; head has some whack with it that can be smoothed out to help improve the location. Lands in firm position with some cross-fire showing up; athletic body and hips allow this to play creating scissor effect at plate. Arm has length towards 2nd base with compact elbow swing to H-3/4 release; the arm is quick and sequences well producing late arm speed from the H-3/4 slot. FB 79-82 T84 rarely straight with cut, run and sink showing firm actions through the zone and looking like he will tick up with more strength. SLD 68-72 hard and firm with lateral action; best ones flash some tilt in the bend.

5/27/19

N. CA Underclass ID - (Catcher) Medium, long frame that is compact and lean strong; chance for frame to continue to grow with space for added strength and projection. Athletic, easy actions on the field with a chance for more as he matures (7.27 60yd). Balanced with knees leaning together keeping high back elbow with even hands at shoulders. Simple load with limited movement allowing compact swing to work in time with lower half. Allows quick barrel to work on slight upward path keeping hands tight to body with barrel flashing late acceleration into zone; chance for more power as he learns to use his legs more. Stayed to the middle of the field flashing some carry into the gaps (83 EV). Catching skills were fair (2.20-2.26 Pop) with times where his arm path is inconsistent in having ball on the bag showing strength with arm-side run (76 MPH). Blocks fine keeping ball close with glove down early and shows some recovery skills.

(RHP): Medium, long frame that is compact and lean strong; chance for frame to continue to grow with space for added strength and projection. Simple step turn delivery keeping hands away from body mid chest as very high front knee moves athletically. Back leg drives body down hill having early bend with fair hinge in back hip; controls front side well landing inline before twisting foot after arm finish. Has slight cross-fire but works with it due to athletic hips. Strong, compact arm from 3/4 release; limited usage of legs jumping off rubber so could be more in velocity. FB 77-79 T82 showing arm side run, SLD 67-69 with tight cutter shape, CB 63-65 short tight 12/6 shape, CHG 71-73 hard with some arm side tail. Attacked zone with four pitches and shows projection in the frame with more velo as he adds strength.
