2024 Utah Top 10 Prospects (Spring Update)

Jeff Scholzen
Utah Scouting Director

The 2024 class is starting to take shape with some elite players that have committed to such places as Arizona State, Utah and Oregon State. A handful were members of the very first Team Utah squad that represented the state at the PBR Future Games in GA last July. Many of the top uncommitted players in this class will be a part of Team Utah again this summer.

As this class goes through their sophomore campaigns and into this summer, many more will be getting college offers and verbal commits will soon follow by the end of summer and into the fall. As we present the top 10 prospects for the class of 2024, it should be noted that I base it off present ability and future overall college impact potential.

2024 Utah Top 10 Prospects (Spring Update)

Zach Edwards RHP / SS / Riverton, UT / 2024

 Commitment: Oregon State

A 6-2 190 above avg athlete, that also plays basketball. Edwards was throwing his FB upwards of 88 mph in the fall ('19) of his 8th grade year, when he received his 1st D1 offer. Going into his freshman campaign, with many offers in hand, he chose powerhouse Oregon State. With a classic high kick to a compact delivery, Zach has good length down the slope with lower half leverage, and has a med compact arm circle thru a HTQ arm stroke. The FB touches 89, but works more in the 85-87 range which is really good considering his age. The CB has the makings of being a solid pitch and he throws K's. Will be fun to watch him on the Utah HS scene over the next 3+ years.

Easton Barrett LHP / OF / Springville , UT / 2024

 Commitment: Arizona State

A Future Games participant and did he ever make the most of his time at LakePoint! Barrett was the most talked about arm from Team Utah as we got a late start to the game, due to rain and he was matched up vs another quality LHP, so there was a good size crowd of coaches in attendance. Showing a quality delivery with the ability to repeat and pound the mitt, Easton has a high kick to delivery and turns his front shoulder and releases it late as he clears the path for this HTQ arm stroke. The late shoulder turn creates deception and better perceived velocity than his 84-86 mph FB suggests. Hitters get late reads and swings and he was tough to pick up. The CB 69-72 has quality break and shape and can start it in the other batters box to the arm side and it finishes with bit in and through the zone. The CH 75-78 is a plus pitch and he’s able to kill spin and throw it with FB arm speed and the pitch has plus deception and late bottom. The ability to throw 3 pitches with command at such an early age (15 Yrs Old) leaves an evaluator to dream on a 92-93 mph arm in a few years. He attracted P5 and major college internet and received 9-10 offers after the event. Was fun to watch!

PBR Future Games Alum

Easton Davies RHP / OF / Orem , UT / 2024

 Commitment: Arizona State

A Future Games participant and the #1 ranked player in the ‘24 class. Easton showed well from a stuff and tools standpoint at LakePoint, as he showed the college recruiters in attendance the strong framed athletic build you look for in a young pitcher. The ability to throw 3 pitches with arm strength. One of the top 20 velocity arms at the event, Davies flashed 91 with the FB and showed sink life below the thigh with a 2569 abv avg spin rate. He showed the ability to repeat his delivery, although he along with some of the other pitchers had some difficulty gripping the baseball due to many of them pitching in humidity for the first time. When he used the rosin, he pounded the ball down in the zone and was able to spin the SL 78-82 with tight late lateral biting action with depth at times. As he continues to grow, add strength and mature, this is the kind of arm that will be throwing really hard one day and attract MLB scouts. He is already on the radar with major colleges from his time in Atlanta, with offers already in hand.

PBR Future Games Alum

Luke (LT) Taylor C / 1B / Skyline, UT / 2024

 Commitment: Utah

One of the top 2 hitters in the ‘24 class, Taylor was the most viewed player profile for 2021 and a PBR Future Games alum. The U Utah commit has big time projection with the bat and behind the plate, as well as physical strength, Ht/Wt gains at maturity. Taylor has an abv avg base to hit from, as he starts with his bat in the 45 degree load position and rocks back for timing with a small knee kick to tone his foot strike. Taylor then unloads and fires his hands tight and slightly uphill through the baseball and finishes strong into a full whippy two hand finish. The swing is geared for extra bases and HR power down the road. Behind the plate, he is flexible and sticks pitches and gets off 2.1 pop times with accurate throws. The arm strength continues to improve as he reminds me of a smaller version of Mike Piazza. Look for big things from this potential power hitting catcher.

PBR Future Games Alum

Trey Evans OF / SS / Crimson Cliffs , UT / 2024

Uncommitted

One of the top 2 hitters in the class presently, Evans garnered 1st Team All-Region and 1st Team All-State honors as a freshman hitting in the 3 hole. A PBR Future Games alum, who will make his way back to LakePoint again this July and already has a D1 power 5 offer in hand. Blessed with a fast bat and an EV high of 100.1, to go along with hand and bat speed metrics of 23.1 and 73.2. Evans generates torque and leverage in his swing and with a slight uphill approach he can send balls deep and out of the park to the pull side as he hit 4 HR’s with 14 2B’s as a freshman. Relegated to LF as a defender and arm/speed wise, what separates Evans from others is an elite bat that should contend for player of the year honors before his HS career is over.

Will Dart SS / RHP / Spanish Fork, UT / 2024

 Commitment: Arizona State

Will toggled between SS and 2B with his brother, as BYU commit and when all was said and done, he grabbed hold of the SS job, and ran with it. A large lean athletic frame with projectable height and weight gains to come. Will be a taller athletic middle infielder, and will carry his man body well in the future. Shows athletic actions defensively and has proper footwork with soft hands. Throws have carry and are accurate, from a lower 3/4 arm slot. Hitting a the top of the lineup and has added some strength over the past year. Does carry his hands a bit forward in his load and needs to get the hands back further to create added leverage, but has timing and squared balls up this spring.

Bo Williams C / SS / Jordan , UT / 2024

Uncommitted

Bo has been a name I've had passed along to me at various points over the last year, and it was good to finally have him at an event for the first time and he didn't disappoint. A rangy, lean athletic build, that looks to add size and strength as he continues to grow and mature, Bo has some athletic quick twitch to his game in the MIF and behind the plate. Slated to start at SS this coming spring at Jordan HS, Williams showed soft hands and educated feet with actions to project in the dirt. However I really was impressed with his catch/throw tools behind the plate. He is active and twitchy with a fast lower half, and gets out from behind the plate quick and unloads line drive accurate throws to 2B. The arm strength is below right now, and is enough for 2.0-2.1 pop times right now, but as he continues to add arm strength, as he will, because the arm is fast and fluid, the times will drop below two seconds. The bat is a controlled type stroke from a lower hand position in his setup and takes a short stride from a medium knee kick and takes his hands slightly back and stays inside the baseball well. There is some uphill path at present right now and he needs to stay through the baseball better, but the base to hit from is solid and he has advanced skills to make quick adjustments. Look for this kid to make some noise this spring ona really good Jordan HS team.

2022 PBR Future Games Invite

Davis Andrews SS / 3B / American Fork , UT / 2024

Uncommitted

Really impressed with this lean Athletic middle INF’er with considerable room for added weight and strength at maturity. Has present strength and shows a solid setup to hit and gets the bat turned at a 45 degree launch, to gain leverage and shows a fast bat to drive the baseball. With elite hand speed at 25.1 with 73.1 bat speed. Andrews shows elite EV’s of 96.8 for a 15 yr old young player, that oozes projection. Playing for the most talented team in the state and one of the better programs in the country. With half a dozen D1 signees and commits, Andrews should be the next in line to be the name of the program in time.

Naulivou Lauaki Jr. RHP / 1B / Springville, UT / 2024

Uncommitted

A BIG DUDE, that looks the part of a football player, and is physically imposing for a kid his age. Right now the jury is out on whether he stays a hitter or lands on the mound. As a hitter, with hand and bat speeds of 25.2 and 73.7, Lauaki showed an EV of 94.6 and drove a few out of the park with a distance max of 379’. The ball jumps with a slightly elevated path, giving him NOW power and projectable plus raw power down the road. On the mound the FB 84-88 looks to be a low 90’s or better tool, as he has 3 years of HS ahead of him. As long as he doesn’t get any bigger and can maintain what he is now physically and allow his man strength to kick in, he could be a force to be reckoned with, in Utah HS baseball.

Zach Carlson OF / LHP / Juan Diego Catholic, UT / 2024

Uncommitted

Carlson, an everyday two way kid, garnered All-Region honors as a freshman a year ago, before undergoing ACL surgery that shut him down all summer/fall. Now back and healthy, Carlson showed off his quick fluid LH hitting stroke with barreled LD’s to straightaway CF and to the pull side with an EV high 93.8 and has barrel and bat control to spray LD’s consistently. A fluid online accurate arm for the OF, Carlson plays CF and should be able to handle all 3 OF spots at the next level. A high baseball IQ, as he grew up playing in AZ for the Scottsdale Dirtbags upon moving to Utah, where we are glad to have him and market his abilities. A Future Games invite, Zach’s star should shine bright with another solid sophomore campaign and heading to LakePoint this summer.
