High School Crosscheck: May 17-22

Nathan Rode and PBR Staff

Currently on a swing through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the last week has been filled with top prospects for me, a couple of whom are expected to be called in the first round come July.

I was first scheduled to fly to Connecticut to see LHP Frank Mozzicatto (East Catholic HS, CT), but called an audible when I learned OF Benny Montgomery (Red Land HS, PA) and RHP Michael Morales (East Pennsboro HS, PA) were going to face off in the semi-finals of the Mid-Penn Conference championship.

As I mentioned on last week’s podcast, Montgomery is a tooled-up athlete. He immediately jumps out on the field with long, lean limbs, broad shoulders, present strength and plenty of room for more down the line. At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, he looks like a young Jake Marisnick with similar tools. Montgomery possesses pluses in speed, arm strength, power and athleticism. He launched balls with ease in BP and later in the session, put on the best oppo display I’ve seen all spring, driving lasers to right and right center. He’s been known for having some awkwardness to his swing and while it still shows up a little in game, he shows more balance and calmness in BP.
