OUTLOOK:

The Boaz Pirates had a successful 2019 season that saw them advance to the 3rd of the AHSAA playoffs, losing to Madison Academy. The Pirates will rely on their bats to carry the team this year as they have a lot of unproven arms that will be taking the mound. Coach Adam Keenum welcomes back six positional starters but only return two pitchers from last season. There is some potential in the new arms but just no experience as the season begins. One of the big bats that the Pirates will rely on is ’22 3B Andrew Burns. Burns should be a big time run producer for the Pirates as he was in 2019 hitting .372 with 25 RBI’s as a freshman. Burns is a Liberty University commitment. Senior 1B/DH Jackson Sarratt also returns and should be a mainstay in the lineup after hitting .333 with twelve 2B’s and 20 RBI’s a year ago. He should have plenty of opportunities to drive in runs this year. Senior C McKane Holland has been an everyday starter since the 8th grade but missed a large part of the season a year ago due to injury. He returned late in the year and was a key hitter in the Pirates lineup, tallying some big hits during the Pirates playoff push. ’20 2B/RHP Easton Hardin hit .340 with five HR’s and 25 RBI’s last year. He is also the most experienced pitcher on the roster as he threw 30 innings a year ago with a 2.40 ERA. The Pirates will be counting on his production in a two- way role again in 2020. Senior SS Alex Hutchens can really pick it in the infield and the Pirates will need him to produce from an offensive standpoint this year. The Pirates figure to be right in the thick of the 5A Area 13 race once again in 2020.
