Freshman Free Showcase: Outfield Analysis

In late January, PBR VA/DC hosted its Freshman Free Showcase at Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen. Over thirty players from the classes of 2021 and 2022 showcased at the event, with the weather cooperating for us to run the 60 yard dash outside. There were a handful of players who stood out and are potential future members of Team Mid-Atlantic for the PBR Future Games.

Today we continue our analysis of the event by looking at the five outfielders who participated in the event.

Aidan Brown OF Staunton River 2021
Brown is 5-8 with an athletic frame. He hits from the right side from an open athletic frame. Strides on line, short load back with slight wrap, smooth rhythm to set up. Explosive lower half with some balance to swing. Gets barrel to ball quickly, slightly uphill path with extension through the ball. Line drive swing that sets up well for future pull power, some bat speed, showed good approach working the middle of the field, exit velocity was 77. In the outfield, clean feet, works around ball to play through it towards his target. Fields with above average hands, clean transfer. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a loose quick arm action, position velocity was 78. Ran a 7.51 60 yard dash.

Jason Mendler OF/RHP Flint Hill 2022
Mendler is 5-8 with an athletic frame, he hits from the left side from a balanced athletic stance. Short stride on line, short smooth load back, good rhythm, quiet simple set up. Good lower half, hips explosive with some balance to swing. Very short path to ball with good extension through it, slightly uphill on the swing path. Line drive swing with some quickness, sets up to have gap power with potential for more to pull side as he develops, exit velocity was 76. In the outfield, gets behind ball and fields it with average hands. Clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, shorter free arm action, outfield velocity was 73.

Nick Pancione RHP/OF Highland 2021
Pancione is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame, he hits from the right side from an open athletic stance. Short leg kick stride on line, loads back to a slight wrap, hips rotate and he keeps some balance during his swing. Short path to ball, line drive swing, showed good approach working the middle of the field, exit velocity was 75. In the outfield, gets body behind the ball and fields it with average hands. Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, some quickness to arm, ball had carry, outfield velocity was 78. Ran a 7.32 60 yard dash.

Malcolm Perry OF Phoebus 2021
Perry is 5-4 with an athletic frame, he hits from the left side from an open athletic stance. Short stride on line, short load back, good hips rotate fully with explosiveness, some balance to swing. Slightly uphill line drive swing, showed good approach working the middle of the field, exit velocity was 73. In the outfield, quick clean feet, gets behind ball and fields it with above average hands, pushing through into transfer. Clean exchange, throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action, outfield velocity was 73. Ran a 7.31 60 yard dash.

Griffin Stieg RHP/OF McLean 2022
Stieg is 6-2 with a lanky frame, he hits from the right side from a more upright balanced athletic stance. Short stride on line, short smoot load back, good quiet rhythm to set up. Violent lower half with some balance to swing. Very short to ball, quick hands that stay inside, fast bat with extension through the ball, slightly uphill path. Line drive swing with gap power and potential for more as he fills out, exit velocity was 85. In the outfield, good feet and gets behind the ball well, fields it with above average hands and pushes through into his transfer.
