JUPITER, FL—Sunday marked the beginning of the playoffs at the 2017 World Wood Bat Championship, which always makes for entertaining baseball as intensity all of a sudden ratchets up. We were treated to a powerful match-up in the first round of the playoffs when Canes National and GBG Marucci faced off. GBG’s lineup is filled with polished hitters from California, starting with SS Jake Moberg (Vista Murrieta HS, CA) and OF Cole Roederer (Hart HS, CA). They combined to go 4-for-7 in their final game of pool play, a 4-3 win over Florida Burn Platinum. Against the Canes, they were tasked with facing LHP Carter Lohman (Hamilton Southeastern HS, IN), a Louisville recruit. Lohman hit the first batter, Moberg, of the game, but settled in and cruised through the first two innings with one strikeout. He relied heavily on his fastball, which was 88-90 mph. He threw just a couple breaking balls at 77 with 3/4 break.

In the third inning, GBG looked prime to break things open when Lohman lost his control and walked the first two batters. He was removed and 3B/RHP Nick Northcut (Mason HS, OH) came in from third base. The Vanderbilt recruit proceeded to shut down the GBG lineup in an excellent relief performance. GBG managed to scratch one run across in that inning, which was charged to Lohman, but Northcut scattered four hits across five innings while striking out five. He pitched in the high 80s while mixing in a slider at 79.

The Canes eventually walked things off on a base hit down the left field line by SS Matt McLain (Beckman HS, CA).

Moberg finished the tournament with a .500 average, going 6-for-12 with a triple. He has a loose, whippy swing and can hit to all fields with his barrel. Roederer hits from the left side and has a classic stroke. Against the Florida Burn, he golfed a double to right-center field and then went with a breaking ball away for a lineout to left thanks to a well-placed defender.
