In early March, over 80 players from all corners of Virginia descended on Coastal Sports Center in Norfolk, Virginia for the PreSeason All-State Showcase East. We continue our detailed breakdown of the event with the catchers:

Jerry Barnes III C / 3B / First Colonial, VA / 2022 Barnes is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has strength present and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, smooth load down. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, very short to the ball, quick bat, slightly uphill line drive swing, very strong at contact with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, easy power present to all fields, exit velocity was 102. Behind the plate, very quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short quick arm action, position velocity was 82 and pop times 1.90-2.04. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works with a knee down or a wide stance, quick soft hands receiving. Showed versatility working out in the infield as well. Ran a 7.14 60 yard dash.

 

 

Landon Bonneville C / RHP / King's Fork, VA / 2022 Bonneville is 6-0 with a strong athletic frame. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, smooth load back to a wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing, strong at contact with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, power present in the gaps, exit velocity was 92. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action, position velocity was 75 and pop times 1.98-2.08. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works with a knee down, keeps body low, shows sway while receiving.

 

 

CJ Buchan C / 1B / Hampton Roads Academy, VA / 2024 Buchan is 5-10 with a strong frame. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, big leg kick stride on line, short smooth load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing, some strength at contact point with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, power present in the gaps, exit velocity was 93. Behind the plate, quick exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 70 and pop times 2.12-2.24. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, wide feet for a good deep stance, takes glove to ball receiving.

 

 

Macaddin Dye C / 3B / Cape Henry, VA / 2024 Dye is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that has some strength present and projection left to it. He is a switch hitter, from the right side hits from a slightly open leaned back athletic stance, leg kick stride on line, short load back with a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, uphill swing path, some strength at contact point with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, some power present in the gaps with room for more. From the left side hits from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, leg kick stride on line, short load back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill swing path, some strength at contact point with some extension through the ball, showed a pull approach with the ability to work gap to gap. Best exit velocity was 88. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 73 and pop times 2.02-2.13. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works with a knee down, tracks down to up, smooth soft hands presents a firm strike. Ran a 7.26 60 yard dash.

 

 

Braydon Kelman C / 3B / Loudoun County , VA / 2023 Kelman is 5-9 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and projection left to it. Hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, short smooth load back with a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, uphill swing path, strength at contact point with some extension through the ball, showed a predominantly pull approach with the ability to use the whole field, power present to his pull side, exit velocity was 92. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action, position velocity was 78 and pop times 1.98-2.06. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, real good deep stance, tracks down to up, smooth firm receiver.

 

 

Michael Muller C / 1B / Warhill , VA / 2022 Muller is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. Hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back to a wrap. Hips rotate and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path, some strength at contact point with extension through the ball, showed a good approach using the whole field, has some power in the gaps with more in the tank, exit velocity was 89. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 74 and pop times 1.99-2.18. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, gets deep in stance with a knee down, tracks down to up, shows sway while receiving. Showed versatility taking balls on the infield as well.

 

 

Matthew Norman C / OF / Catholic, VA / 2022 Norman is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. Hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, short smooth load back. Hips rotate with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, uphill swing path, some strength at contact point with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, has some doubles power present with more in the tank, exit velocity was 89. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 71 and pop times 2.06-2.24. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, alternates between one leg out and squat, shows some sway while receiving. Ran a 7.11 60 yard dash.

 

 

Jacob Park C / 1B / Lightridge , VA / 2023 Park is 5-11 with a strong athletic frame that has some projection left to it. Hits from the right side from a relaxed open balanced stance, strides on line, short smooth load back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill swing path, some strength at contact point with some extension through the ball, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap, has some doubles power present in the alleys, generates loft to his pull side, exit velocity was 84. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 73 and pop times 2.03-2.16. Showed accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works from one knee, shows some sway while receiving.

 

 

Mateusz Puszczalo C / 3B / Hickory, VA / 2024 Puszczalo is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. Hits from the right side from a slightly open leaned back athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, short load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path, some strength at contact point, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap, has some doubles power present in the middle of the field with more in the tank, exit velocity was 90. Behind the plate, gains ground during clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 71 and pop times 2.14-2.27. Receiving, works from good wide stance, drops into block quickly. Showed versatility working out in the infield, where his velocity was 87. Ran a 7.59 60 yard dash.

 

 

Trevor Selph C / RHP / Ocean Lakes , VA / 2022 Selph is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has some strength in the lower half and plenty of projection left to it. Hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, short load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path, strength at contact point with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap, extra base power in the middle of the field with more to come, exit velocity was 90. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 72 and pop times 2.03-2.14. Showed accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works with knee down or in a squat, shows sway.

 

 

Colin Shue C / RHP / Heritage (Leesburg), VA / 2023 Shue is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. Hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, loads back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, uphill swing path, gets some extension through the ball, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap, generates some loft to his pull side where he has some power, exit velocity was 86. Behind the plate, quick exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action, position velocity was 75 and pop times 2.07-2.29. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works with knee down, works down to up and shows some sway. Ran a 7.51 60 yard dash.

 

 

Spencer Sigmon C / OF / Hickory, VA / 2022 Sigmon is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has strength present and some projection left to it. Hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, loads back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path, strong at contact with some extension through the ball, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap, easy gap power to all fields with potential to add more, exit velocity was 93. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, longer arm action, position velocity was 76 and pop times 2.04-2.16. Receiving, gets some depth in his stance, showed some sway.

 

 

Wesley Stanford C / 2B / Briar Woods, VA / 2022 Stanford is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has strength present and some projection left to it. Hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, short smooth load back. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Nic Ventrice C / OF / Ocean Lakes, VA / 2023 Ventrice is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. Hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, short load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, level  line drive swing path, some strength at contact with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, some extra base power present in the middle of the field with more in the tank, exit velocity was 91. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 67 and pop times 2.10-2.19. Jack Wickum C / SS / Cape Henry , VA / 2023 Wickum is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. Hits from the right side from an open leaned back athletic stance, short stride on line, short load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path, some extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, gap power present in the middle of the field with more in the tank as he fills out, exit velocity was 91.
