See notes and video on 6 players from a pair of scrimmages that St. Paul VI hosted in the last week, against Westfield and next door neighbor Freedom (South Riding).

Westfield

Jonny Farmelo OF / SS / Westfield, VA / 2023

Farmelo is a Virginia commit and the #2 ranked player in the VA/DC Class of 2023. Athletic 6-3 frame with a good build and still some room to add more strength to it. Played both outfield and short in the game, but seems poised to play short for the Bulldogs this spring. At the plate, showed some good things in his first live ABs. Found two barrels and showed the willingness to go to all fields. His second at-bat of the day was with the bases loaded and he attacked the first pitch he could deliver runs on for a sharp single to right. Later in the game, he went the other way on an elevated pitch and lined out to left.

Freedom (South Riding)

Ryan Marohn LHP / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2023

Marohn is an NC State commit threw the first two innings on a frigid and windy Tuesday night at Paul VI. Looked about what we have come to expect from him, he did have to work around some runners and deal with a very very tight strike zone. Showed the ability to move the fastball in and out with no fear of attacking inside at the belt on righties. Fastball was 88-90, touching 91. His slider was also its normal self, with good armspeed and tunnel off of his fastball and late tight 2/8 break to it, running 79-81. He did show a really good change-up twice, with good armspeed and late heavy sink to it, both pitches were 80 and both were the finishers on strikeouts.

St. Paul VI Catholic

Logan Eisenreich RHP / OF / Paul VI, VA / 2024

Eisenreich is a Virginia Tech commit and is 6-2 with a lankier frame that still has projection left to it. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders get slightly closed off to generate some deception. Arm action is shorter and quick from a lower three-quarters arm slot. Throws with some intent and has some recoil to his arm action. Threw just one inning but was quick and efficient. Fastball gets some downward angle and a touch of late run to it, rides a bit when up in the zone, was 87-90, topping at 91, but was mostly plugging away at 89. Showed two breaking balls with distinctly different shape. Curveball was 72-73 with late power break that almost plays like a hard downer breaking ball. Slider was 82-83 with late tight 10/4 break and drew some swing and misses. Pretty good arsenal and still upside left, has a chance to have a big year.

Matthew Roussey RHP / OF / Paul VI, VA / 2025

Roussey pitched both Saturday and Tuesday. A short relief outing on Saturday and then started and threw three innings against Freedom. He is 6-3 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and projection left. Drop and drive delivery, throws from a very high arm slot with a very short arm action that has some quickness to it. Fastball was pretty consistently sitting at 83 Saturday and touched 84, a tick slower on Tuesday at 81-83. Gets some boring action to armside that also has a bit of depth and downward angle to it. Curveball was 63-66 with traditional 12/6 break that backed up sometimes. Slider had a bit more tilt and velocity, running 68-69, with more 11/5 shape to it and a bit later break. Really liked his poise on Tuesday starting against Freedom. Attacked hitters early in the count with fastballs and breaking balls. Showed feel for the breaking ball. Struck out 4 in 3 scoreless innings against the defending State Champ's starters.

Jackson Sirois SS / RHP / Paul VI, VA / 2024

Sirois is a UVA commit and had a tough 2022 season battling illness, but he looks back healthy and good to go. Lankier athletic 5-11 frame that has some strength on it and room to add more. Thought he moved well at short, looked smooth and showed lateral range. Very quick exchange when he needs it, but also does a good job of knowing what tempo he has to work at. At the plate, absolutely annihilated the pitch in the video from Butash into the gap and then turned on the jets for a triple. His swing is short and he is violent at the contact point, ball explodes off his bat. Speed on the bases is a weapon for him as well. In his first at-bat, beat out a routine 3-hopper to short for an infield single. A great start to 2023 for Sirois and looking forward to getting another look at him later in the season.

Will Tighe C / 3B / Paul VI, VA / 2025

Tighe is 6-1 and has strength in his frame. He will likely not be Paul VI's primary catcher this spring with Mattox Flatt on the roster, but he got a chance to perform in the scrimmage and did some good things. Showed a pretty mature approach in his at-bats, showing patience and a plan during each trip. Here, got a ball he could drive out over the plate with a runner in scoring position and attacked it, short to contact with a slightly uphill path through it, has some strength at contact point and shows doubles power to all fields.
