Collegiate was another team in 2022 that saw some highs and lows throughout the season. The Cougars seemed to turn it on late and made it to the state semifinals. Can they get over the hump in 2023?
Classification: VISAA Division I 2022 Record: 17-8 *Lost in semis to Cape Henry*
Key Losses: Eric McDaniel (Mary Washington), Pearse Riendeau (DePauw), Donavan Williams
The Cougars come off of a seventeen win season and had some really quality wins. They lost in the semifinals to the eventual state champions, Cape Henry Collegiate. Although they lost arms in Eric McDaniel (Mary Washington) and Pearse Riendeau (DePauw), the Cougars are a year older with what is still a somewhat young group. Offense is not lacking, as they return the core of their lineup, but they will still be searching for that frontline arm. Hayden Rollison and Hank Shield could be two of the more experienced arms for the Cougars in 2023, but do not sleep on ‘25 Carter Mitchell as a potential mainstay on the mound. They have a nice combination of youth and experience, returning infielders Silas Gwathmey (EMU) and Hartley Rahman, to go along with the power bats of Carter Mitchell and Hank Shield. VMI commit Will Slater is one of the best defensive catchers in the Richmond area and should do a great job handling the staff. This is my pick for the sleeper in VISAA Division I.
