Carroll Quiet; Young Doubles

WASTHINGTON—It’s a strong year in the Pacific Northwest thanks to Oregon State having the No. 1 draft prospect in C Adley Rutschman and Washington having a good crop of high school prospects. So we’re spending several days in the region to see what we can. After landing on Monday, we saw a rivalry game between Lakeside School and Eastside Catholic, featuring OF Corbin Carroll (Lakeside School, WA). He had a quiet day, going 0-for-2 with a groundout, flyout and intentional walk. He was aggressive, swinging early in the count. He starts with a tall set-up and has all but eliminated his high leg kick. The stroke is quick and compact. On his groundout, he pulled up about two-thirds of the way down the line and still got there in 4.2 seconds. He popped out in his next at-bat and then came up with runners on second and third, so Eastside Catholic put him. That backfired as Carroll and the runners in front of him all scored.

On Tuesday, we made a scenic drive to Selah, WA, near Yakima, to see SS Carter Young (Selah HS, WA). A switch-hitter, Young has been going back and forth, regardless of the pitcher, but hit exclusively from the left side in this game. He double to straightaway center field in his first at-bat, putting a loose, quick swing on the ball. The bases were loaded in his next at-bat and he squared one up to right field, but it was caught at the track. He popped out in his third trip and was left on deck in the bottom of the fourth, before the game ended in the fifth due to the mercy rule. He made just one play on defense, an easy pop up in center field, but showed athleticism in pregame. He moves around the infield with ease, has athletic actions and an average arm.

On Wednesday, we're doubling up on outfielders. We'll get another look at Carroll before a nightcap that features OF Josh Mears (Federal Way HS, WA).
