Today is the first official day high school programs can have organized practices and as student-athletes all across the state gear up for their season the Prep Baseball Report is adding to the excitement with our Top 25 Preseason Rankings.
Combining all four divisions we compiled our top 25 preseason teams poised to have success this season.
With back to back Division 1 state titles Sun Prairie would seem like the likely choice for the top spot but Stevens Point topped our list after losing to Sun Prairie in the state title game SPASH returns nearly their entire team. 21 of their 27 wins return on the mound in RHP Austin Schulfer (2014), LHP Cal Giese (2014) RHP Alex Lee (2015) and RHP Aaron Nickel (2014). Stevens Point is the only spring team that can boast two arms that pitch in the upper 80’s with Schulfer and Lee. Schulfer and Giese both won seven games for the Panthers last season so adding Lee to that 1-2 punch and you have three guys with the stuff to shut down any offense in the state. Come playoff time Schulfer, Giese, Lee and Nickel will make it extremely tough on opponents and no other team in the state has the depth that Coach Terpstra has on the mound.
Kimberly will be tough again this year with Mr. Everything Scott Schreiber back for his senior year. The Nebraska commit can do it all on the baseball field and the Papermakers will need him down the stretch to make a run to Appleton.
Jefferson comes in as the top ranked Division 2 team as the Eagles have four college commits already and will look to that senior leadership to make a run at state. 15 of their 19 wins from a year ago return in Heath Renz, Kevin Krause and Andy Brahier.
Bay Port looks to be back in Appleton again this year, even after graduating a lot of seniors Coach Simoens and the Pirates seem to produce an army of prospects in their program. Several sophomores made impacts for them last year including OF Joey Baier, LHP Dakota Klein and RHP Connor Hock. Watch out for junior LHP Klein to have a breakout season as the long lanky lefty made huge strides this offseason with a deceptive repertoire and fastball now reaching 84 mph.
Division 4 state runner up Lake Country Lutheran made the list with nearly their entire squad back in 2014. Losing only two impact seniors, sophomores Jake Hall and Hop Buran could easily fill those voids and keep the Lightning on track for another trip to Appleton.
We will dig deeper into team previews of all of the top 25 teams throughout the preseason but here’s a look at our Power 25.
