2016 Overall Rankings Updated: 18 Wisconsin Prospects Make The Cut

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

We have one more Preseason I.D. showcase this weekend before Wisconsin’s state rankings get an update, but in the meantime the PBR overall rankings were recently updated in the 2016 class. Wisconsin has always fared well in that class and this update featured three new states that include Florida, Louisiana and Maryland. Similarly to the 2015 overall rankings, the addition of Florida has added a ton of new prospects so most of the Wisconsin prospects have seen their ranking fall simply due to the addition of so many more good players from new PBR states. Wisconsin held strong with 18 players in the top 400. The biggest revelation was Gavin Lux (Indian Trail), who recently decommitted from Virginia Tech, moving up from No. 21 to No. 10 overall. Lux is continually improving his game and filing out his frame and is one of the more highly touted shortstops in the country. Lux is sure to get plenty of pub this summer as he will most likely be one of the more followed draft prospects of the 2016 class.

C Ben Rortvedt (Verona Area) also saw his stock rise from No. 28 to No. 23 which is a huge jump considering all of the new prospects added to the rankings. Rortvedt is one of the top catch and throw guys around and has proved that this winter.

RHP Matt McCarty (South Milwaukee) also jumped 20 spots in the overall rankings. McCarty recently sat 85-87 mph with a sinking fastball that he showed command of and a sharp darting slider at 73-76 mph. Even with the jumps McCarty still looks to have plenty more in the tank of his 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame.

RHP Joe Gahm has seen a big spike in his stuff this winter and is new to the overall rankings this time around. Gahm has shown one of the top breaking balls in the state with a 72-76 mph hammer that has late action. He’s also improved his fastball, now touching 88 mph.

Stay tuned for the Wisconsin state rankings to be updated sometime in late March.
