PULASKI, WI – When Green Bay East and Green Bay West decided to combine their schools’ baseball programs two years ago, it was hoped that it would make them more competitive than they had been separately. That hope may have materialized on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Park in Pulaski.

The No. 6 seed Devil Cats advanced to sectionals in just the co-op’s second year of existence with a 5-2 win over No. 3 seed Pulaski. The win completed a season sweep of the Red Raiders.

Coming off the heels of a 2-0 victory over Rhinelander on Tuesday, the Devil Cats started out the game looking like a team on a mission. Designated hitter Colin Shaw knocked in two runs with a double in the top of the 2nd inning to give East/West the early lead.

The game was fairly uneventful for the next couple of innings due to some solid pitching from Pulaski’s Conrad Feivor and East/West’s sophomore LHP Max Van Boxel. Pulaski got two runners on base in both the 2nd and 3rd innings but Van Boxel was able to work out of the jams with timely pitchesMax Van Boxel and the help of some good defense.

The Red Raiders pulled a run closer in the 4th inning after Spencer Feivor drove in a run with a single, but the score remained deadlocked at 2-1 until the 7th inning.

In the top of the 7th, Noah Robinson hit a double to the left field fence to score two runs for East/West. The next batter, Jake Watzka, drove Robinson in with a single of his own.

Pulaski threatened to come back in the bottom of the frame after their first two batters got on base and a balk moved them over to second and third. However, they were only able to score one run on a passed ball before Van Boxel closed the door and clinched the regional championship for the Devil Cats.

Feivor pitched five innings for Pulaski and allowed three hits and two earned runs. He walked four and struck out one. Van Boxel pitched a complete game for East/West and gave up six hits, one earned run, and struck out three.

Shaw led the way offensively for the Devil Cats. He finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI. Robinson went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI as well. Pulaski was led by Joe Franks, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

East/West will face Green Bay Preble, the No. 2 seed, in the sectional semifinals on Tuesday. The game will be played at Green Bay Southwest at 1 PM. Bay Port faces Ashwaubenon in the other semifinal, which will be played at 10 AM.
