No. 12 Bay Port blanks Notre Dame

By Spencer Flaten and Alex Cheban

HOWARD, WI- No. 12 Bay Port took another step in their quest for a conference title on Friday afternoon. The Pirates (17-5) silenced the bats of Notre Dame (12-8) en route to a 7-0 win over the Tritons. Junior pitcher Connor Hock carved up the Notre Dame batting order, striking out 14 batters and scattering 5 hits over 7 innings of work.

The Pirates’ dream was the Tritons’ nightmare in the 2nd inning. Bay Port erupted for 7 runs in the frame, highlighted by a 2 run home run by Mac Cisar and a bases-clearing double by Riley Tilot. The Pirates worked the gaps for the entire game, bashing out 3 doubles on the day.

Zach Abfall went 1-for-1 with two walks, and Troy Albrecht went 3-for-3 for the Pirates.

That was all the offense Bay Port needed. Notre Dame, fresh off a win over Pulaski’s Luke Van Lanen, struggled to string any hits together. Joe Curtin led the Tritons with a 1-for-2 performance. The only real threat they posed came in the 5th inning. The bases were loaded after back-to-back hits by Chandler Purcell and Ty Yewman, plus a walk drawn by Jack Charles, but Hock came up with a big strikeout to end the inning.

The Triton hitters were off balance all afternoon thanks to Hock’s skill out on the mound. Working at a quick pace and showing good velocity, he challenged the Notre Dame lineup and came out victorious most of the time.

Bay Port now holds a 1.5 game lead atop the Fox River Classic Conference. If they win their next game against Green Bay Southwest on Tuesday, they’ll wrap up their bid to be conference champions for the second straight year.

Notre Dame, who has already locked up a top seed for the Division 2 playoffs, will face Ashwaubenon, the second place team in the FRCC, on Tuesday. The Tritons beat the Jaguars 13-2 earlier this year.
