No. 3 Appleton North 8, No. 7 Hortonville 1
APPLETON, WI – No. 3 Appleton North took advantage of a five run sixth inning to capture the 8-1 win over No. 7 Hortonville. The game was a lot closer than the score might indicate as there was a palpable energy on the field as two of the top ten teams in the state squared off.
Josh Toonen started for the Polar Bears and got out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning with two strikeouts.
Toonen was later helped out by Joe Cliver who turned a nice inning ending unassisted double play to end the third and another Lightning scoring threat.
The Lightning eventual got on the board in the fourth. Alex Henwood was a perfect 3-for-3 with a HBP in the contest and scored the first run of the game, leading off the 4th with a single. Tyce Wheeler then laid down a sacrifice bunt moving him to second and Henwood would score on and error by second baseman Reece Fredrick.
Zak Kosoloske posted the only tally for Hortonville as the sophomore hit his first varsity homerun, a solo shot to left in the fourth inning.
That was all Appleton North’s Jack Harvath would allow throwing a complete game to pick up the win.
