Power 25 Update: Week 1

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

This week the Power 25 will stay unchanged. The WIAA season opened last Tuesday with several teams around the state opening their season. However, this early in the season there are many of our Power 25 teams that have yet to play a game and just has not been enough action to fairly update the rankings. However, we will take a quick look at some teams that had good opening weeks and take you around the Power 25 with the action that we did see.

Inside The Top Ten

No. 1 Arrowhead and No. 3 Appleton North are the only two teams in the top 10 waiting to open their season. No. 2 Bay Port suffered an opening day loss in Florida to Northeast HS who was 14-0 at one point in their season, so that loss shouldn’t hurt them in the landscape of Wisconsin. No. 4 Sun Prairie started off just as expected at 2-0 and No. 6 Wilmot Union suffered a double header loss to unranked Grant (IL) over the weekend. No. 7 Janesville Parker and No. 9 Oshkosh North also suffered early season losses.

Knocking on the Door

Verona Area was just on the bubble of getting into our Preseason Power 25 and they are off to hot start making us reevaluate our Power 25. The Wildcats are off to a 3-0 start and seem to be clicking offensively. They’ve scored 33 runs in their first three games and freshman Stephen Lund has been a big spark plug for the Wildcats. We ought to see exactly what we’re getting with Verona in the coming week as three of their next four games are against current Power 25 teams.

Check back with us next week as we will update our Power 25 rankings and continue to keep you updated on action around the state.
