GREEN BAY, WI – The Green Bay Preble Hornets advanced to the sectional finals with an 8-1 victory over the Green Bay East/West Devil Cats on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hornets sent junior Caleb Schoenholz out to the mound, while East/West countered with senior Jake Watzka.
The last time these two met, Watzka carved up the Hornets’ lineup with an 18 strikeout, 1-hit performance. This time around, the roles were reversed.
The Devil Cats struggled to get anything going against Schoenholz, while Preble was able to put together a few rallies against Watzka.
Preble opened up the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to a wild pitch and RBI singles from Andy Peterik and Ryan Dougherty.
Another wild pitch led to another run for Preble in the bottom of the 4th to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead. Zach Champine gave Preble a 6-0 lead in the 5th with a 2 RBI double to deep left.
East/West’s Max Van Boxel broke up the shutout in the top of the 6th with an RBI single to make it 6-1, but Preble added two more runs in the bottom of the frame via a 2 RBI single from shortstop Connor Lemmens. The resulting 8-1 score would hold up for the rest of the game.
Schoenholz looked unhittable at times for Preble. In seven innings of work, he struck out 13 and gave up only one earned run on seven hits. Watzka took the loss for the Devil Cats. He pitched four innings, gave up three earned runs, and struck out three.
Dougherty, Lemmens, and Peterik all collected two hits for Preble. Noah Robinson led the East/West offense with a 2-for-4 performance.
Preble advanced to the sectional final with the win, where they would face Bay Port.
