Preseason Preview: Menomonee Falls High School

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Wisconsin

With the summer high school season just days away we will be previewing a few of the top programs that will look to contend for the title in 2013.

The Menomonee Falls Indians are coming off of a highly successful season in 2012, going 27-5 over the summer, as well as winning the Greater Metro conference. The Indians play summer high school baseball and have proven to be a perennial powerhouse in summer baseball.

The 2013 season looks to bring the Indians another successful run. They will be returning six starters from a year ago, as well as six pitchers who contributed significantly last season. Coach Patrick Hansen believes they have another legitimate chance at going all the way this year with his Indians.

Of the six returning starters, University of Illinois-Chicago commit, Brett Krause will be leading the way. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound shortstop hit .390 while driving in 42 RBI over 30 games as a junior. He also had a significant impact on the mound eating up 34 2/3 innings pitched with a 3.43 ERA. The Indians will be leaning on Krause heavily this year to be an impact guy both in the middle of the lineup and on the mound.

Another senior who should set the tone for the Indians is Krause’s double play counterpart, Cole Hernikl. Hernikl hits at the top of the lineup for Coach Hansen and sets the table right away for the Indians by putting pressure on opposing pitchers. Last season Hernikl stole 47 bases in 48 attempts breaking the all-time stolen base record at Menomonee Falls in just one season. This season the 6.62 60 runner will be adding to that career record with every base he steals.

On the mound the Indians will be turning to senior Brendan Paule who went 7-0 last season over 48 innings pitched. The 6-foot, 170-pound lefty recorded a 1.90 ERA while walking only 12.

Newcomer Jordan Richardson and Ty Webber could also have significant impacts on the Indians success. Richardson will be entering his first varsity season behind the plate and will look to help keep the running game in check along with senior Tony Romens.

Ty Webber, is a freshman at Menomonee Falls and could see significant innings on the varsity squad this season. The 6-foot-3, 175 pound right hander is already hitting 80 mph with his fastball and has the makings of a big time 12/6 breaking ball.

Coach Hansen and the Indians will be near the top this summer looking to take down defending champion Oak Creek HS who will be bringing a nucleus of young players to the forefront.
