Q&A With Central Michigan Commit Grant Frazer

Oconto’s Grant Frazer (2016) recently made his college commitment to Central Michigan. Frazer was also a standout at this year’s PBR Future Games and really accelerated his interest by his performance there. Here’s some insight into how everything materialized for Frazer.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Frazer: The recruiting process for me was pretty easy, but more importantly it was really enjoyable. I found it easy talking with coaches and recruiting coordinators because they are all baseball guys that love talking about the game. I liked competing at showcases and scouted tournaments as well.

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Frazer: I was looking for a great school both academically and athletically. Having a great relationship with the coaching staff was really important to me and I needed to feel like the campus was a place that I could call home for four years. I also really like to win baseball games and Central Michigan has a great history of doing that.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?

Frazer: The recruiting process started for me at the PBR Futures Games Powered by Under Armour. It was there that I first really received attention, and playing fall ball for the GRB Rays last year also helped me with exposure. Every tournament we played was heavily scouted.

PBR: Where did Central Michigan first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Frazer: Central Michigan first saw me play at The PBR Futures Games Powered by Under Armour. They saw me again in January at a showcase in Chicago and contacted me a few days after the showcase and said they liked what they saw and invited me to their camp. At the camp, I was able to really get to know the coaches and check out the facilities. They called me on the ride home and said they were interested, that's when things became serious.

PBR: What do you like most about Central Michigan and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Frazer: I wanted to go to a college where I felt comfortable with not only the coaches, but the campus, and with my debt on graduation. I felt comfortable with everything Central Michigan had to offer and it seemed like a great fit for me. What really sold me on Central Michigan was their history of winning. I can't wait to be a part of the program in 2016 and do what I can to contribute to that tradition.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Frazer: I received offers from Gonzaga, Butler and Central Michigan. I also had strong interest from Western Michigan, Illinois State, Bradley, Holy Cross, Oakland and Eastern Illinois.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?

Frazer: I would have to say my good friend, teammate and Gonzaga recruit, Taylor Borchers from GRB. Although, I never faced him, I get to see how good he is at practice and get to play alongside him.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Frazer: It would have to be playing for team Wisconsin in the PBR Future Games. I was on a team with some of the best talent in the state and was able to compete and hold my own. Also playing fall baseball for the GRB Rays. We played in some of the best tournaments and played against some of the top talent in the Midwest.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Frazer: Surround yourself with people and coaches that love the game. I was very fortunate to have great coaching all the way up. Greg Reinhard and Max Cardio from GRB are outstanding coaches. They keep it fun and loose, yet teach you the game and how it's going to be at the next level. I was also able to play for and learn from Coach Andy Zwirchirtz for three years. I owe a lot of my success to him and also to my dad for teaching me the game.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Frazer: I would have to say helping Oconto win the 2013 Wisconsin D3 state championship. That was very special because it was the first state championship for Oconto in any sport. We were a very good team, but it was our team chemistry that won it for us.

PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?

Frazer: Last year’s seniors and retired coach Brian Sohrweide will be missed. But, we are behind our new coach Adam Timm and I feel with the group of guys we have coming back, we can make a strong run at making it back to state again this year.
