Senior Games: Outfield Analysis

Continuing our reports from the Senior Games, today’s analysis looks at the top outfield prospects. Several stood out, but none with more upside than OF Jaelin Williams (Eau Claire North). Williams is a lean projectable athlete with quick twitch actions who shows a combination of speed, arm strength and pop in his bat. South Milwaukee’s Josh Sobczak featured a plus arm from the outfield at 91 mph.

Here’s a look at the top outfielders, listed alphabetically.

Jack Grosz, OF, St. Joseph Catholic, 2018
6-foot-1, 187-pound outfielder, strong build. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, gets into lower half. Easy swing showed pop, above average bat speed on uphill plane. 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively feet worked well, showed actions through the baseball, average range. Arm action is long and firm, over the top, 75 mph. 4.62 down the line.

Tyler Kilboten, OF, Durand, 2018
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, lean wiry build. Hits from an open stance, short stride, lower half works, solid balance. Line drive approach, singles type. 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. 1-for-2 in game with a single through short. Defensively arm action is long, occasional accuracy, 83 mph from the outfield. Active feet, plays through the baseball, footwork is quick and fluid. 4.75 down the line.

Josh Kolb, OF, Kettle Moraine, 2018
6-foot, 160-pound outfielder. Right-handed hitter, tall setup, reverse tap stride. Above average bat speed, 87 mph exit velocity from the tee, path works uphill, lifted contact, bat strength. 4.51 runner down the line. Defensively arm played long from a high ¾ slot, 80 mph. Clean exchanges, average hands, worked through the baseball.

Griffin Lietzau, LHP/OF, Slinger, 2018
6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed two-way player, longer limbed, wiry frame, projects. On the mound delivery is on line, slightly closed. Arm action is short, ¾ slot, loose arm action. Fastball has arm side run, showed feel for the zone, 77-79 mph. Curveball has gradual 2/8 action, 66-67 mph. Changeup is thrown with arm speed, fading action, 68-70 mph. Left-handed hitter, open stance, leg kick stride, average balance. Hits with rhythm, 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is loose, high ¾ slot, accurate arm, played with arm side run, 80 mph from the outfield. Plays through the ball, clean actions. 4.94 runner down the line.

Anthony Moore, OF, Sturgeon Bay, 2018
5-foot-9, 160-pound outfielder, carries strength. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, toe tap stride. Level path, line drive approach, average bat speed. 83 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is long, high ¾ slot, 79 mph from the outfield. Average hands, plays through the ball with two hands, infeld type actions. 4.51 runner in the 60.

Josh Sobczak, OF, South Milwaukee, 2018
6-foot-2, 205-pound outfielder, strong durable build. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, lower half works. Compact swing short to the baseball with bat speed, some effort. 93 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed a plus arm from the outfield, carried well, 91 mph from a short over the top slot, played on a line and accurate. Projects in right field, plays through the baseball deliberately. 4.53 runner down the line.

Joey Tadych, OF/RHP, Shawano, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound two-way player. Right-handed hitter, open stance, leg lift stride, average balance. Quick twitch load and trigger, short path, showed bat speed. Spray type hitter, 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. Went 1-for-2 in game with a hard hit single to right field. Defensively arm played accurately, from an over the top slot, 81 mph. Plays through the baseball clean exchange, fluid footwork. Above average runner, 4.55 runner down the line, aggressive on the basepaths. On the mound fastball played straight at 74-77 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, showed depth and sharpness, 66-67 mph. Changeup fades, 71-72 mph.

Reese Vold, RHP/OF, Black River Falls, 2018
5-foot-11, 160-pound two-way player. On the mound delivery is smooth with long arm action out of high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 76-78 mph, mostly straight. Curveball has 11/5 shape, gradual action. Changeup played at 73 mph. Right-handed hitter, slightly open stance, leg lift stride, solid balance. Path works uphill, loose hands, lifts the baseball. 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is long, high ¾ slot, 80 mph from the outfield. 4.72 runner down the line.

Jaelin Williams, OF, Eau Claire North, 2018
6-foot-4, 175-pound outfielder, lean lanky frame, loose and athletic projects well. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, good balance, athletic in the box. Quick athletic hands, gets through the zone quickly, advanced bat speed. Pull side approach with uphill path. 89 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively moves well in the outfield, easy stride, plays through the baseball cleanly, fluid footwork. Arm action is short and over the top, showed accurate, with carry, 85 mph from the outfield. 4.29 runner down the line.
