Senior Games: Pitching Analysis

Finishing our reports from the Senior Games with end our positional rollout with the pitchers. Several stood out in their outings, specifically RHP Tate Carter, RHP Brady Fields, RHP Will Bush, RHP Jacob Johnson and RHP Austin Selz to name a few. Below is a look at all the top pitching prospect in attendance. Stay tuned tomorrow as we will rank the top overall prospects from the event.  

Will Bush, RHP, New Berlin West, 2018
Currently ranked No. 90 in Wisconsin’s Class of 2018. 6-foot-2, 150-pound, lean, lanky, athletically-built right-handed pitcher, projectable frame. Short, quick arm action from a high ¾ slot. Tall and fall, methodical delivery, works on-line, lands toe-open. Fastball, mostly straight, misses glove-side on occasion, 81-82. Curveball, 11/5 shape, has depth, swing and miss potential, 67-70. Changeup, near fastball arm speed, fade action, 74.     

Tate Carter, RHP, Brookfield Central, 2018
6-foot-3, 175-pound right-handed pitcher with a lanky, projectable frame. On the mound, short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, tall and fall delivery, works on-line, lands square, finishes upright. Fastball, commanded, flashed cut, 81-83 mph, touching 84. Slider, 10/4 shape, depth, fastball arm speed, has feel for, 71-74. Changeup, mostly straight, 66-71. Used fastball/slider combination effectively to keep batters guessing.  

Teig Chase, RHP/INF, Kettle Moraine, 2018
6-foot-1, 190-pound two-way player, solid build. On the mound delivery is on line, some effort, short over the top arm action. Fastball showed cut action at times, 78-80 mph, worked downhill in warmups. Curveball played 12/6, casted at times, occasional bite when out front, 65-68 mph. Straight changeup, near fastball arm speed, 70-73 mph. Right-handed hitter, tall open stance, short stride to square. Showed bat strength, level path, some bat speed. 89 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is short and over the top, 76 mph across the diamond. Will play tall through the baseball at times, sure hands.

Javon Connolly, RHP, St. Joseph Catholic, 2018
6-foot-2, 180-pound, lanky right-handed pitcher. On the mound, stretch-only, short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, easy effort. Tall and fall delivery, works towards first base, lands square. Fastball, mostly straight, consistent strikes, missed glove-side when he was off, 76-78 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, 56-59. Changeup, fade action, 63-66. Interesting change of speeds.

Brady Fields, RHP/3B, Badger, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound two-way player, lean frame. On the mound delivery plays on line, squared landing. Arm action is long from a high ¾ slot, loose arm. Fastball is mostly straight, showed control, 79-81 mph, occasionally cut at 76-78 mph. Curveball showed depth at times, 67-70 mph. Struck out two in one inning of work. Right-handed hitter, open stance, short stride, lower half worked. Middle of the field approach, line drive type contact, 83 mph exit velocity from the tee. Drove a triple deep to left center in game. Defensively arm action is long, high ¾ slot, 82 mph across the diamond. Profiles at third base, average hands and feet play through the ball. 4.82 runner down the line.

Connor Gilroy, RHP, Martin Luther, 2018
6-foot-1, 187-pound, right-handed pitcher, showed impressive instincts defensively on the mound. Short arm action from a high ¾ slot, works on-line, lands square. Fastball, mostly straight, 65-67 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, 53-54 mph.

Ryan Green, RHP, Notre Dame, 2018
6-foot-1, 195-pound, right-handed pitcher, physical frame. On the mound, short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, tall and fall delivery, works on-line, lands toe closed. Heavy fastball, flashed run, comes out with life, 78-80 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, depth, sharp break, commands, 65-67. Struck out one in one inning.

Seth Hackbarth, RHP, Oconomowoc, 2018
5-foot-10, 185-pound, right-handed pitcher. On the mound, long, firm arm action, high ¾ slot, tall and fall delivery, works with pace. Fastball, mostly straight, 71-72 mph. Slider, 11/5 shape, gradual break, 64. Changeup, mostly straight, 62-63 mph.

Jacob Johnson, RHP, Arrowhead, 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound, right-handed pitcher with a lanky frame. On the mound, short circular arm action, high ¾ arm slot. Tall and fall delivery, lands toe-open, falls first base side. Fastball, run action, 77-81 mph, touching 82. Curveball, 11/5 shape, flashed depth, 69-70. Changeup, near fastball arm speed, 70-75. Uses both sides of the plate with three pitch mix. Struck out two batters in one inning, one on a curveball and another on a changeup.

Griffin Lietzau, LHP/OF, Slinger, 2018
6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed two-way player, longer limbed, wiry frame, projects. On the mound delivery is on line, slightly closed. Arm action is short, ¾ slot, loose arm action. Fastball has arm side run, showed feel for the zone, 77-79 mph. Curveball has gradual 2/8 action, 66-67 mph. Changeup is thrown with arm speed, fading action, 68-70 mph. Left-handed hitter, open stance, leg kick stride, average balance. Hits with rhythm, 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is loose, high ¾ slot, accurate arm, played with arm side run, 80 mph from the outfield. Plays through the ball, clean actions. 4.94 runner down the line.

Alex Ostrowski, LHP, Green Bay East, 2018
6-foot-3, 195-pound, lanky right-handed pitcher with wide shoulders. On the mound, long arm action, ¾ arm slot, tall and fall delivery, lands square, finishes upright. Fastball, flashed run, controlled, 74-76 mph. Curveball, 2/8 shape, 65-67. Slider, downward action, 67. Changeup, fade action, 70-71. Splitter, slight tumble, 67-79.

Austin Selz, RHP, Eau Claire Memorial, 2018
5-foot-10, 165-pound, right-handed pitcher with a strong frame. On the mound, worked exclusively out of the stretch, long, stab arm action, quick arm speed, over-the-top slot. Tall and fall delivery, high front-side, quick rhythm, works on-line. Fastball, 81-83 mph, kept low in the zone. Curveball, manipulated in warm-ups, showing a variation of shapes from 12/6-to-10/4 with depth and fastball arm speed. Slider, 10/4 shape, 69 mph. Struck out one in one inning of work.

Joey Tadych, OF/RHP, Shawano, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound two-way player. Right-handed hitter, open stance, leg lift stride, average balance. Quick twitch load and trigger, short path, showed bat speed. Spray type hitter, 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. Went 1-for-2 in game with a hard hit single to right field. Defensively arm played accurately, from an over the top slot, 81 mph. Plays through the baseball clean exchange, fluid footwork. Above average runner, 4.55 runner down the line, aggressive on the basepaths. On the mound fastball played straight at 74-77 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, showed depth and sharpness, 66-67 mph. Changeup fades, 71-72 mph.

Reese Vold, RHP/OF, Black River Falls, 2018
5-foot-11, 160-pound two-way player. On the mound delivery is smooth with long arm action out of high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 76-78 mph, mostly straight. Curveball has 11/5 shape, gradual action. Changeup played at 73 mph. Right-handed hitter, slightly open stance, leg lift stride, solid balance. Path works uphill, loose hands, lifts the baseball. 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is long, high ¾ slot, 80 mph from the outfield. 4.72 runner down the line.

Jacob Young, RHP, Downers Grove North, 2018
Bluffton College commit. 5-foot-9, 170-pound, strong right-handed pitcher. On the mound, stretch-only, short, wrapping arm action, quick arm speed, high ¾ slot. Tall and fall delivery, smooth rhythm, lands square, finishes walking off the mound. Fastball, mostly straight, kept in the strike zone, 77-80 mph. Slider, 10/4 shape, showed feel for, 69-71. Curveball, shape varied between 12/6 and 11/5, commanded, 68-69. Splitter, slight late tumble 73-74.
