Stock Report: 2014 INF Luke Schafer

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Wisconsin

Today’s Stock Report features Luke Schafer. Schafer is a 2014 graduate of Middleton HS where he is one of the top offensive threats in the Cardinal lineup. Schafer is an infielder who hit .368 last year for Coach Schmitt and the Cardinals, earning him second team All-Conference honors in a loaded Big Eight Conference. With Schafer back for his junior campaign and the Cardinals returning a ton of contributors from last season’s 21-8 squad, look for Schafer and the Middleton Cardinals to make a run at Sun Prairie from the conference title.Luke Schafer

Schafer has an athletic build. He is a strong 6-foot, 175-pound infielder who brings a well-rounded game to the table. Offensively, he hits from a balanced setup using a short stride. He shows solid bat speed recording 81 mph exit velocities from the tee. His approach is simple with little movement in his head; he looks to work the middle of the field. Schafer is a line drive, gap to gap hitter making hard contact with some extension.

Defensively Schafer shows a soft glove. His footwork is fluid and athletic while fielding the ball out in front, left of center. When transferring the baseball his exchange is quick and clean. Schafer also proves he can field the baseball on the move, showing body control on the slow roller. His arm works loosely from a high ¾ arm slot at 74 mph across the diamond.

Schafer should have a big impact again on the Cardinal lineup in 2013 as he looks to repeat his All-Conference performance from a year ago.
