To make a varsity team as a freshman is an honor in itself but to also help your team win a state championship while going 3-0 on the mound is almost the complete package. Well that exactly how Mitchel Makarewicz (2015) started his high school career at Oak Creek.
Last year Oak Creek feel short of their state championship goals but did win the conference regular season and tournament title. With a young squad last year Makarewicz has high hopes for 2014.
“I think Oak Creek will have a chance at another state title this year. We had a very young team last year, with a lot of guys coming back this year. We have a very strong pitching staff coming back in 2014, along with a lot of strong bats in our line up. I am hoping this year will be my best year so far. I’d like to be a first team All-Conference pitcher, and lead us back to state.”
Makarewicz is a long lanky right handed pitcher with a deceptive delivery. At 6-foot-3, 180-pounds he works with a long arm action out of a high ¾ slot getting consistent downhill action. He has shown a breaking ball at 71-72 mph and tinkers with a forkball that flashes late downward action when it’s on. At the Midwest Future Games in August Makarewicz worked two scoreless frames in his two innings of work while striking out a pair. His downhill action induces numerous groundballs and he also shows that he can pound the strike zone efficiently.
Since then Makarewicz said he has been in contact with Ohio University, Illinois State, Stanford and Kentucky. Although yet to make any visits he has had plenty of suitors.
“I would like a college with a good business school from an academic standpoint. For baseball, I want somewhere that will give me the opportunity to become the best baseball player I can be. I would like to go to a school in a competitive conference with a chance for success,” said Makarewicz.
Makarewicz’s high school plays a summer high school season and the right hander said,
“In a perfect world, I would like to make my decision before this year’s high school season starts for me in May.”
