Wisconsin Future Games Recap

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

Wisconsin’s showing at the PBR Future Games didn’t quite go as planned as the Badger state left Indiana with a 0-2-1 record. The offense for Team Wisconsin was hard to come by as they managed just 12 hits on the weekend. Adam LaRock (Eau Claire North) got the only extra base hit of the weekend with a scorching triple to the right center gap.

Other notables at the plate were Gannon Goldensoph (Oak Creek) who collected two hits. Zach Gilles (McDonnell Central) had two hits with three stolen bases and a run scored. Jack Kinzer (Port Washington) also chipped in with an RBI single.

In Wisconsin’s 1-1 tie to Kentucky, pitchers Keith Kutzler (Tremper) and Grant Frazer (Oconto) both pitched two scoreless innings. Adam LaRock and Matt DeYoung (Xavier) each added scoreless frames on the mound.

In Wisconsin’s final contest of the weekend against Michigan the offense was unable to push a run across and only managed one hit. Pitchers, RHP Ryan Schmitt (Arrowhead), RHP Tyler Becker (Menomonee Falls) and RHP Nathan Brown (Arrowhead) all tossed scoreless frames. Schmitt sat 85-87 mph in his second outing and worked with excellent tempo and conviction. His curveball worked at 75-76 mph with swing and miss action in the zone.

Nathan Brown came away from the Future Games as one of the biggest attractions for college coaches. On Day 2 in Brown’s first outing he sat 88-89 mph with a 74-76 mph breaking ball. On Day 3 in Brown’s encore outing he worked the final inning of Wisconsin’s final game and sat at 89-90 mph with more 90’s than 89’s. His breaking ball showed similarly sharp action as it did in his first appearance and struck out the side to finish the game.
