Seth Backus pitched a gem as Braxton County, No. 9 in the most recent Metro News AA Power Rankings, defeated Clay County. Backus, a Fairmont State commit, threw five innings allowing one hit, no runs and he did not walk a batter. He recorded thirteen of his fifteen outs by strike out.
Braxton County wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as two walks, two errors and singles by Brandon Poling and Payton Lockard added up to an early 3-0 lead. An RBI single by Troy McMillan extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth.
As Backus was handcuffing the Panthers, the Eagles continued to extend the lead. The bottom of the fourth saw an error, a walk and three singles give Braxton County a 7-0 lead. The score remained unchanged until the sixth when Clay County welcomed Backus leaving by getting on the board on an error, a walk, an Ethan Meadows single and a three-run double off the bat of Colton Moore. The 7-3 score held as the final.
Multiple hit games were recorded by Brandon Poling 2-for-3 and Jacob Oates 2-for-4.
