HelieneHampshire senior RHP Matt Maiers entered Thursday night's 3A Region II final with an unblemished 8-0 record. Hedgesville 1B Daniel Heleine came in with 15 home runs and 54 RBI on the season. Something had to give.

Heleine won the first battle of the two unsigned seniors when he hit a solo home run in his first at bat to stake the Eagles to a 1-0 first inning lead. After Hampshire tied the game, Heleine came to the plate with two outs and a man on in the 3rd inning. The Hampshire coaching staff elected to walk Heleine setting up a two RBI double by Troy Markley.

Senior Stevie Hite added a solo home run in the 5th inning to push the Hedgesville lead to 4-1, a run that turned out to be the game winner. The Trojans plated two runs in the top of the 7th, but were denied the tying run when reliever Cody Butts got a strikeout to end the game.

Hedgesville advances to play Parkersburg South in the state semifinals on May 31 at 5:00pm. The Eagles, winners of nine straight, and 13 of their last 14, will be making their first appearance in the state tournament since 1974.
