PA State Games Preview: Eli Ellis

Josh Kuykendall
West Virginia Director of Scouting

With the PA State Games just a week away, we will begin a series of articles highlighting players in attendance that are representing West Virginia. We start today by highlighting George Washington LHP, 2023 Eli Ellis. Ellis is currently ranked 8th overall in the 2023 class, and the second ranked left-handed pitcher.

West Virginia Scouting Director Josh Kuykendall on Ellis: "Eli has pitched in some big games. Most recently this past summer he threw a seven-inning, three-hit masterpiece against Team Arizona in the Junior Future Games. Look for him to have a solid outing."

Scouting Report

2/09/20

5-foot-9, 150-pound left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a short, controlled lift-and-replace stride. Showcased balance throughout with a feel for the barrel with a direct swing path from a low hands load. Registered a bat exit velocity of 79 mph and ran a 7.90 60-yard dash. Showed fluid, athletic actions around the bag at first base with active feet and accurate 75 mph arm strength across the diamond. The lefty sat 75-76 off the mound from a high 3/4 arm slot. Delivery is compact, in line and repeatable. Curveball at 63-64 showed 1/7 rotation and changeup was thrown at near fastball arm speed at 69-70.

12/30/18

Ellis attended this event as a pitcher-only. He displayed advanced mechanics for his age. Very balanced and with a smooth rhythm and delivery. FB sat 72-73 mph, coupled with a CB at 58-60 mph, and a CH at 62-64 mph. His change up shows the potential to be a put out pitch for him in the future. Overall, Ellis will be a pitcher to watch in the 2023 class.

2/24/18

Initiates swing from slightly open set up with stride to closed without gaining ground. There is sway in backside load. Separation is adequate. Subtle top half dive is present. Weight shift and backside release are slightly passive. Swing is short and hands work directly to the baseball. Athleticism is evident. Benefit would be gained from avoiding sway while utilizing a more aggressive weight shift and back side release.

Defensively, hands are aoft and feet work well around bag. there subtle tendency to let ball get deep. Transfer is clean throwing motion has length.

On the mound, works out of high 3/4 arm slot with excellent balance and rhythm. Arm action is long and loose. First base fall is created by limited top half drive over front side. FB sat 70-72 with considerable arm side run. CB command at 57-58 was inconsistent but at best offering flashed 1-7 shape with moderate depth and late break.
