Hillen was one of the standouts for 2023 grads at the Fall Open. Everything he did was clean, really liked his actions at the plate and in the outfield. At the plate, Hillen showed a smooth swing from the left side, with a slow, controlled forward move into a fast and sudden swing at foot strike. He utilized his lower half well and caught barrels on almost every pitch. Moves well in the outfield, and the arm will play with time. An exciting 2023 to follow, who will seem to continue to grow and develop his already polished skillset.
On the mound, Hillen demonstrated an arsenal of practical and complementary pitches, with a deceptive arm action that will keep hitters off balance. He established his fastball (76-78, max 79) low in the zone with hand side run early in his pen. His changeup (70-72) fell off the table late. Most impressive was his curveball (64-65). An elite pitch for a 2023; tight, efficient spin, with devastating vertical and horizontal break. Lots of good things in the future for this young athlete.
