Layne had a terrific start on the mound. Struck out seven over 6.2 innings. Only run surrendered was unearned and unfortunately was the game winning run for Hilltop to walk off San Marcos in the 7th. However, that shouldn't take away from what Layne was able to accomplish in his 83 pitch outing. Worked his FB 82-83 mph throughout with arm side run. Consistently showed off a 69-71 mph SL that he had great command for. It had the traditional horizontal shape to it. Layne had the ability to get it over for a strike in early counts or even when he was behind hitters. It was at its best though, when he could bury it down in the LH batters box in 2 strike counts. Picked up numerous whiffs and strikeouts with it through the entirety of the game. Layne pitched with efficiency by only throwing 83 pitches in 6.2 innings. He seemed to get better as the game went on. Had a 6 pitch 4th inning that really helped the pitch count remain low and extend his time on the bump. He worked fast and never got too cute with hitters but rather went right after them with his stuff and consistently filled up the zone. The ending was not the outcome Layne or San Marcos would’ve liked but nonetheless, Brody Layne looked sharp and pitched a great game for the Knights.
