It wasn’t smooth sailing for the talented Virginia recruit, but that might have been why this particular outing was so impactful. Going up against a loaded East Cobb Astros lineup, Stewart scuffled early with some miscues around him as well as what proved to be a very tight strike zone. However, that provided the canvas for the quick-armed right-hander to deal with, and ultimately overcome some adversity.
An athletic, 6-foot, 160-pounder with polished, dynamic movement down the mound, Stewart made some big pitches, even without his best stuff. The fastball worked 85-87 early on with a tighter arm stroke, and the well-documented (already) aptitude for spin was present with manipulation of shape and 2500+ rpm. Beyond the actual stuff, which should generate plenty of whiffs in coming years, and upside, which is high due to the all around athleticism (he moved to shortstop for the weekend after pitching), it was refreshing to see a young arm have to battle out of tough spots without succumbing to the ever looming bullpen aid.
