6-foot, 195-pound, physical athletic frame, shoulders are sloped, back is wide and he has a good durable pitcher’s body. A right-handed pitcher, continues to impress and keeps getting better. Throws a heavy ball out of a high ¾ slot. The delivery is simple, leg raise has some coil and gets to a good gather position. The arm path is a little longer, pounds the fastball to both sides, with some run to the 2 seamer. The fastball was 80-84 mph. The breaking ball was 70-72 with good downward spin and depth to it. Flashed a solid cutter/small slider at 74-75 mph, was good looking pitch. The change up works and was clocked at 74 mph. Times to the plate were 1.51, could be quicker. Definite follow for me, has all the makings of the velocity to continue to climb.
3/2/16
6-foot, 200-pound, thick, durable pitchers frame. The shoulders are sloped, lower half is strong, but still has room to fill out. A right-handed pitcher, delivery is repeatable, hands start at mid chest, leg raise has some coil to it. Stride length is long, could get in line slightly more, release is on time and out front. The arm action has some length to it, and comes out of a high-¾ slot. The fastball was 80-83 mph, tick up from the fall, continues to improve from previous workout. The curveball is a plus pitch, clocked from 71-74 mph, it's late, with a downward break. The change up was 76-79 mph, has some downward action to it, needs to be slightly slower off the fastball. Times to the plate were 1.65-1.69. The delivery out of the windup is a tick slow, but could pick the tempo up. Definite follow for me.
10/11/15
A repeater for PBR, Michael continues to get better, seems to do something different every time I see him. Pitches from a ¾ to high-¾ slot, it's downhill, with some sink and bore to it. The fastball was 80-82 entire time, velocity has gotten better each event. Throws a true curveball at 70-72 with good rotation and the break is late. The changeup needs a bit more feel with it but has the makings of being a pitch that he can get hitters out with, the velocity is in the mid-70s. The delivery is simple and sound, may open a bit early, just trying to get more out of the fastball. The body is bigger than it looks, the lower half is strong and the back is wide. Definite high school follow for me, much more to come with him.
7/28/15
Second PBR event for Mathews, a right-handed pitcher, pounded his fastball for strikes. The fastball was 78-80, was a tick higher this time around. He comes at you from a -¾ slot, the motion is simple, leg raise is smooth, arm action is long and clean, located fastball to both sides of the plate. Pitched downhill with lots of strikes low in the zone. Steps across his body, gives him some deception to the hitter. Times to the plate were 1.37-1.44. Curveball was harder this time at 70-71 with tight spin and late break. Changeup was 74-75 with good sink. Michael attacks and comes after the hitters. Body is bigger than what you think. I like him a lot, need to go see him next spring.
7/14/15
6-foot, 165-pound, right-handed pitcher has a body that is long, back and shoulders are wide. Michael has a chance to be special. The arm action is clean, with not much effort. His direction to the plate needs to be a little better, he steps across his body at times, which doesn’t allow him to get full extension. Fastball was 78-81 with good sink to it. Curveball was 69-71 with good spin to it. Changeup had proper rotation and good depth. Michael has a lot of potential because he attacks the hitters. Definite follow for me.
