10/24/17- The Louisiana State recruit, had a strong outing at the Florida Diamond Club Showcase last weekend, so he attracted a strong crowd of scouts for his start with the Toronto Blue Jays Scout Team. This outing wasn’t on par with last week, but his upside is still evident. He has an athletic, projectable frame and flashed some sink to his fastball at 87-90 mph. He shows a solid feel for a changeup at 79-81 mph and mixed in a slider that had tight break at times. It sat around 80 mph. He allowed an unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out three.
07/12/17- Committed to Louisiana State University.
06/08/17 - Costello, who has an extremely projectable frame and is very athletic, has been impressive this spring. He continued to show well, working 91-93 with late life. Also worked a tight, sweeping slider at 78-79 and a changeup at 76-77. His father also played at LSU, so there is quality bloodlines. He has quality stuff now and projects to continue to improve.
04/04/17 - Costello would finish 4+ innings allowing three runs on three hits with four walks while striking out three. Costello has a lean, high-waist and projectable frame. He worked a fastball from 88-91 mph from a high 3/4 slot with a somewhat short arm action. The arm action was clean in the back, but he landed closed with a somewhat short stride that led to an inconsistent release point and inconsistent command at times. The fastball showed late life with tilt, especially when he got extended and worked down in the zone. He also showed a curveball with slurvy action at 75-79 mph. Also a bit inconsistent, it showed sharp downward action when he was on top of the baseball. He also showed an occasional changeup at 80 mph. Overall, there is a ton of upside with Costello and could make a big jump as he continues to refine the delivery and just use from the athletic lower half.
11/10/19: 6-foot-4, 221-pound strong, physical frame. Worked primarily from the stretch with a simple, on-line delivery, short strider with a clean, medium arm action into a release. Creates good angle working 94-95 mph with arm-side sink at the bottom of the zone at low effort getting swings and misses with his fastball. Showed feel for a slider with 10/4 shape at 83-84 and a change up with quality arm speed both having the makings of a plus pitch. (Sofio)
