The College of Charleston commit is a switch-hitting catcher with power from both sides of the plate. Illig has balance from both side of the plate and uses his size and leverage to backspin baseballs out of the park. Behind the plate, Illig is a big target with soft hands. He has above average arm strength to go with a quick release and good footwork.
6-30-2018: 6-foot-1, 210-pound, athletic, strong frame with little remaining projection. Similar body type to former Yankee, Jorge Posada. Offensively, Illig is a switch hitter with future plus power from both sides. I prefer him from the left side slightly, but I am confident he will be able to do just as much damage from the right side as well. In batting practice, he showcased his power from both sides, hitting numerous balls out, mostly pulled. Has quick hands, turns on balls very well and is very quick to the ball. Excellent bat speed and pretty good barrel control. His power carried over to the games, lots of hard contact over three games of my evaluation. However, he does have swing and miss concerns, struggling against off speed. Will need to cut down on strike outs to prove to scouts that he can hit at the next level. Behind the dish, he sat low and showed a very active lower body with quick feet and lateral range. Did a great job of blocking balls. Received balls out in front with quiet, soft hands. Very quick to his feet and showed off a good arm. Pop times ranged from 1.9-2.1. I really like his alertness and leadership behind the plate. Overall, Illig has a strong and durable enough frame with solid defensive skills to stay behind the plate. The question will be his bat and if he can cut down on the swing and miss. (Joe Pera)
