2021 MLB Draft: A draft-eligible sophomore in 2020, Nelson returned to Tallahassee and shot up boards thanks to a massive performance on the season. His big raw power showed up in games and finished tied for the most in Division I with 23. He has a good approach and the pop plays to all fields. Defensively, he blocks well and has a strong, accurate arm to go with being a vocal leader, giving him several quality attributes for a professional backstop.
Yet another draft-eligible sophomore for the Seminoles, Nelson is a strong armed backstop with a quick release and good carry on his throws to second base. At the plate he showed a pull approach, around the ball swing with good bat strength and raw power to his pull side. Like many of his Seminole teammates, Nelson is struggling to find his best swing at this point in the season. Once it clicks, expect his draft value to rise, especially if he can cut down on the near 22% strikeout rate he posted as a true freshman last season. (Seifert)
Florida State recruit. Strong, athletic frame standing at 6-foot, 190 pounds with a good lower half that he utilizes well at the plate. Nelson has strong hands and wrists, looking to drive the ball with gap-to-gap power. The ball jumps off the bat and he shows present pull side power. Behind the plate, he works to keep everything in front of him and shows soft hands along with an above average arm on his throws down to second.
Florida State recruit. Solid, strong frame. Has a simple approach at the plate from the right side where he showed the ability to use all of the field when he produced multiple line drives into the gaps during batting practice. He has pre pitch rhythm and uses his strength well. There is a high offensive upside with power potential. Defensively, he shows solid defensive action. Moves and receives well. Threw out a base runner during the game at second with pop time being 2.01
05/10/17 - Florida State recruit. Currently ranked No. 26 in the Florida 2018 Class, No. 127 Overall. Currently stands at 6-foot, 190 pounds with a solid, physical frame and a strong lower half. Stood out at the plate where he showed above average bat speed, strength in his swing, and the ability to square the ball up with authority. Ball jumps off the bat and makes hard, solid contact with a good feel for the barrel. Went 1-for-3 in the game which included an RBI double that was laced down the left field line. Crushed a ball just foul earlier in the at-bat that would have easily cleared the fence. Showed strong wrists and good flexibility in his legs behind the plate. Moved well to his left and right, displayed the ability to deaden pitches in the dirt.
4/5/16- Florida State commit who stands at 6-foot, 190 pounds with a strong, stalky, and physical body with athleticism. Behind the plate he has a quick transfer, bounces around, and has a plus arm. At the plate he has good rhythm and is slightly open in his stance. Nice swing plane with good bat speed and the ball really jumps off his bat. One of the top catchers in Florida in the 2018 class.
4/24/15 - Florida State commit. 6 feet 175 pounds with a strong, athletic, and projectable body. Loose hips that allow him to be quick and block well behind the plate. Soft receiver and sticks pitches. Strong, loose arm with a quick transfer. Good rhythm at the plate with a good separation and a small leg kick. Quick, flat swing. Ball jumps off his bat.
12/14/14 - Thick stocky strong body. Short quick stroke with good hitters hands. Stays inside ball. Avg ML power now with much more to come. Has easy power for a young kid. Decent actions in infield with enough arm. Will be a power bat.
