Cape CodHawks is transferring from Air Force to Vanderbilt, and while the Paul Skenes comparison is not a fair one for a litany of reasons, both he and Vanderbilt can hope for a jump in stuff similar to the one Skenes experienced at LSU once he was able to focus more on training for baseball and less on training for a future career in the Air Force. As it is, Hawks, who gave up three hits and one run with 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings this summer, already has good stuff. He works primarily with a two-pitch mix of a low-90s fastball that touched the mid 90s in the spring with the Falcons and a curveball in the low 70s. If analytics is your bag, Hawks finished the summer sixth in the league in the Stuff+ metric. Hawks was a utility reliever last season for Air Force, as he closed games and often threw multiple innings in his outings—he threw 50.2 innings across 22 appearances—and that should open the door for him to hold just about any role for Vanderbilt in 2024.
