2020 DRAFT: A former two-way player as a pitcher/outfielder for the Bulldogs, Smith is now solely a lefty strike-thrower with a good feel of a three-pitch mix. At 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, he has a clean delivery and loose arm action. He works quick with a fastball that ranges from 87-91 mph, a plus slider/cutter at 82-85 and an above-average 81-83 mph changeup. He can spot his fastball to both sides of the plate, while also having the ability to work back/forth with his change of pace and bury the breaker below the zone. As the Sunday starter, working behind likely first-rounders Emerson Hancock and Cole Wilcox, Smith put together a solid shortened 2020 season (0-1, 3.32 ERA, 19 IP, 10 BB, 20 SO, .179 OPPBA) after posting a 3-3 record with a 4.30 ERA in 46 IP as a sophomore. More of a gut feel prospect than an industry consensus one at this point, Smith's best days are ahead of him. The number of rounds in this summer's draft will largely dictate his immediate baseball future.
3/23/19: Athletic lefty strike-thrower with great feel of a four-pitch mix. Clean delivery and loose arm action. Works quick. Fastball ranged from 87-91 which he spotted well to both sides of the plate. Plus slider/cutter at 82-85 and above average 81-83 mph changeup. Struck out seven in six scoreless innings on Saturday.
