8/12/19: Drafted in the 2nd round (68th overall) by Baltimore out of high school in 2015, Hughes did not sign and will now enter his 5th year senior season at Tech competing for a starting role. His second start of the Cape season was largely successful with four shutout innings. Allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four. His first inning was very crisp, releasing a 92-94 mph fastball from a high three-quarter plus slot with a one piece arm action. The pitch was mainly straight, but did show occasional cut when he raised his slot to just above high three-quarter. He also spotted an average changeup to his armside at 83-84 mph while mixing an above average 84-86 mph slider. Each subsequent inning his stuff backed up a bit, pitching at 90-91 with his fastball and beginning to push his change by the third inning. Hughes finished his Cape season early, making the last of his three starts on July 22. He pitched a total of 12 innings and finished with a 4.50 ERA. (Seifert)
