LHP Luke Hensley, 2028, Tri-West: Hensley was one of the more-impressive sophomore arms I’ve seen this spring in my look on him. He is ultra-projectable at 6-foot-5, 185-pounds looking the part of a prototypical pitching prospect. The arm swing is clean and will hold future jumps. He uses a shorter inward turn before a more-rotational uncoil that did cause some fastball scatter, but he was able to make adjustments after a rougher second inning to settle into a quality start. He finished the night with 5 IP, 4 walks (3 in 2nd), 2 hits, and 14 punch-outs. The fastball came out at 84-87 on this look, and I did see him throw on 3-days rest so I’d imagine that velo trends to more consistent upper-80s this summer. He showed a 79 CH in warm ups, but went to SL/CB as the offspeed weapon of choice in game. The CB is the secondary I preferred, a true 1/7 shaped low-70s hammer that he landed. The CB played off the FB well and featured some top-down bite at times. He found the mid-70s slider later in the outing and was effective with it using it as a back-door land pitch that he swept into the zone.

Looking like the highest ceiling guy of the bunch, Hensley's 6-foot-5, 185-pound frame is as premier as it gets and his bullpen reaffirmed bullish projections. Showing shades of a young Ethan Lund with a similiar tall lift and uphill shoulder plane, Hensley attacked with quality arm speed for an 86-87 mph fastball that played with boring life. He spun the breaking ball in the mid-70s, a slurvey-type offering that holds upside, and he controlled it well. There was feel for a low-80s change, as well, as he controlled the entire arsenal at an average to better clip with below-moderate effort throughout. As strength is packed on, Hensley's stuff will tick even further, but for now he holds the look of a must-know southpaw for August with starters' upside.

+ '28 LHP Luke Hensley (Danville) is the No. 3 ranked lefty in the class as it stands now, leading another group of talented left-handers. I'd like to note the depth of lefties to this point in the class, but Hensley is one we are bullish on because of his ultra-projectable, 6-foot-4, 185 pound frame and clean-armed look. His fastball worked up to 81 from a higher slot and his secondaries are highlighted by a well-spun (22-2300s) breaking ball in the low-70s.

10/29/24

Hensley, a 6-foot-4 southpaw with major upside in the frame/operation, showed off clean, compact arm action to go along hips that power rotation in the delivery. His fastball reaches 81 for now, but it is easy to dream on more. He also showed an upper-60s breaking ball with 1/7 shape that he was able to use as an out-pitch.
