C/RHP/UT Spencer Schiff, 2028, Evansville Mater Dei: I got a full look on Schiff across a doubleheader and it was one of the more impressive I've gotten on a sophomore this spring. Athletic, 6-footer who is starting to fill out. He DH'd in game one, collecting 2 hits in that one, and also took a low-90s heater to RCF for extra-bases in the night cap. He starts wide in a strong base before a small hinging load as the barrel gets to launch. He gets off above average bat speed and the barrel works on-plane in an impressive manner. There was some occasional chases on spin down, but for the most part he made quality swing decisions. He showed as a tick above average runner, and gave me a 2.05 pop b/w innings in G2. He concluded my look with three innings of work on the mound where he sat 84-87 after catching the first part of the game. The fastball was controlled well and played to both sides with average properties. He got hit early in the outing, but settled in and retired 9 of the last 10 he faced - 5 via punchout. The breaking ball varied in velocity enough to make me believe he was trying to throw two different ones, but the shapes were similiar as the velocity ranged from 70-75 on a sweepy-shaped pitch that he controlled and got S/M with. He flashed a couple mid-70s change that showed at least average. I think Schiff is a slam dunk early recruit, especially with my track record on him, as he performs consistently and brings above average tools and a wide range of skills.
Another must-know Evansville native for 2028 is C/3B/RHP Spencer Schiff, a highly-touted player currently ranked inside the T300 nationally for 2028s. One of the most consistent performers we've evaluated to date in the class, Schiff's in-game ability shines brighter than his showcases performances, although he still posted quality metrics at this event with: a 6.94 60-yard dash, a 97 mph exit velocity, and a mid-80s arm across the infield that was also up to 82 from the crouch. There is tons of polish to his game, taking a mature approach to batting practice where his swing works with balance always, and the barrel works on-plane throughout. He flashed strength with multiple batting practice homers, including a couple to the big part of the LCF gap, and there is still plenty of room for more strength in his 6-foot, 185-pound frame that should bring even more raw power. He is a steady defender at both positions, with real upside on the mound - though he did not pitch at this event.
Schiff is the No. 1 ranked catcher in the class as it stands now and turned in a 74 mph arm from the crouch, pops in the 2.1s, and brought a polished look when receiving. Schiff's right-handed swing is his best tool. He has a quick, repeatable load and overall simple operation, with exits reaching 92. Schiff is a really good mover and stands at 6-foot, 170 pounds. He turned in a 7.13 60-yard dash, a really solid time for the age and profile, and also showed upside as a right-handed arm with a fastball up to 81 and feel for sharper spin.
+ '28 C/RHP Spencer Schiff (Evansville Mater Dei) was another exciting '28 prospect in attendance. Offering a high-waisted look with some strength present already in the 6-foot-1, 170 pound frame, Schiff showed well in all facets with a very advanced set of skills. An above average runner already (7.13), Schiff showed off a repeatable stroke during batting practice, hitting out of a wide setup with small moves and creating bat speed in a short window. The bat works flatter through the zone, with his best balls elevated to the pull-side gap with strength, reaching a peak exit velocity of 90.8 mph. Schiff showed strong catch-and-throw abilities during the workout, accurately placing the ball on the second base bag with pops as low as 1.97. The projectable youngster is also an intriguing watch on the mound, up to 83 mph last spring with feel for a breaking ball.
