Few players elevated their draft stock more significantly than the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Herron. Typically, when a pitcher announces he throws five different pitches, the tendency is to mentally check out on at least two of them. Not Herron. Shockingly, all five pitches had different shapes, all coming from the same arm slot and, most importantly, he threw all five pitches for strikes. His most impressive pitch of the arsenal—and arguably the best off-speed pitch of the entire Super 60—was his splitter, which had consistent late, hard downer action at 79-80 mph. His fastball sat 88-90, touching 91, with natural arm-side run. His 79-80 slider looks to be a more effective swing-and-miss pitch than his 75 mph curveball. Nevertheless, it was serviceable enough to flip it in to further confound hitters. For good measure, he also threw an 82-84 mph changeup with good arm action and sink. Above his full arsenal, Herron’s delivery is simple, athletic, in-line and repeatable. His arm works free and easily with little effort from a high three-quarter slot. Herron still remains uncommitted.
In Jupiter, the 6-foot-2, 197-pound Herron turned in one of the most impressive stints of the day. Herron had more swings and misses and forced a lot of bad swings from a sharp, late-diving 79-81 splitter, 87-89 mph fastball and effective 74-76 mph curveball. All three offerings Herron commanded for strikes. His arm works cleanly and athletically; his delivery simple and in-line.
