Entered in the 9th inning on Sunday for some mop-up duty for the Tigers. With a long arm path in back and a high release point, Garrett tickled the gun for 96 mph a couple times while working his fastball downhill into the zone. He mostly sat on 94 with his heavy heater, inducing three easy ground outs while also walking one batter in his shutout inning of work.

An initial look at the 6-foot-6, 200 pound power-armed righty was during a PBR/TrackMan workout in late May of 2020. Garrett had less than ideal control, but his fastball reached 94 mph with a 2550+ spin rate, his tight breaker peaked at 2867 rpm and he killed spin with a changeup in the 1820-1880 rpm range. During a more recent look this fall, some of the violence to Garrett’s head dunk has lessened, and as a result his control has improved. He attacked downhill from a high three-quarter slot with his trademark 94-95 mph high-spin fastball, throwing six consecutive strikes in the process. His breaker showed better between innings than in-game, but when it’s on it has 12/6 rotation with depth and late bite. It’s an improving pitch with out-pitch potential. Garrett is mostly a two pitch guy at this point as the consistency of his changeup is a work in progress. He has the current risk/reward profile of a Day Two draft candidate.
