2/18/17 - Viertel is a 6-foot-3 180-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. Viertel has a long and lean frame, clean and loose arm action, in line stride with athletic finish, throws a heavy fastball at mostly 80-82 mph, curveball looks to be a good pitch with late action, 12-to-6 shape, 68-63 mph, controllable change-up at 73-75 mph, arm side release, near fastball arm speed.
1/31/16 - Viertel is a 2018 right-handed pitcher from Boonville, Missouri. Viertel’s 6-foot-2, 165 pound, slender and athletic frame project out well for the future. His delivery is fluid and includes a high leg kick as well as accelerates nicely down the mound. Viertel’s loose arm action allows for his fastball to appear heavy as it jumps out of his hand and is 79-82 mph. Viertel’s changeup is a plus pitch for him as it was 72-74 mph, with good arm side run and sink. The curveball exhibits 10-to-4 action and is 64-67 mph. Viertel’s clean and repeatable delivery, easy arm action and ability to throw a high percentage of strikes make him an attractive prospect.
2020 DRAFT:A Missouri State commit, Viertel was off to a 3-1 start with a 2.67 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 27 IP for the Roughriders. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound sophomore righty features a 89-94 mph fastball with more velo in the tank when his frame fills out. He shows and average curveball with the spin, shape and velocity to project to become a plus pitch in the future. His changeup is another average pitch which should become above average with greater use and leading to refined command. At this point he pitches with more control than command, but the delivery and arm action are sound enough that he will likely attain average command down the road. If history tells us anything with top JUCO arms heading to Springfield, MO, expect Viertel to be polished up quickly into a top round arm for the 2021 draft, if he's not selected early enough for his signability wishes this summer.
