Tall, thick frame, listed at 6-foot-6, 265 pounds. North Carolina Central commit. Throws from a high-3/4 slot with short arm action. Some effort in the arm swing. Fastball has arm side run, ranging 83-86 and touching 88. Tall and controlled at balance from the windup and stretch. Somewhat choppy rhythm. The shoulders are level, stays in line, lands square, and in an athletic position. The breaking ball is a downer, ranging 69-72, with 11/6 arc, not showing much tilt.
8/1/19:Although ranked in ourTop 2020 prospect list from early February, Vernon is another under the radar arm from a non Power Five Conference in the Cape. He is listed at 6-foot-7, 290 and brings power and excitement to the bump with a big fastball and two above average-to-plus offspeed offerings. He struck out out 31 batters in 20.2 IP during the regular season and was totally dominant during his two-inning relief win against Harwich, retiring all six hitters he faced with three strikeouts. Pumping heaters with max effort, he sat 94-95 while touching a pair of 96s and one 97 on the gun. The bore on this pitch ate up right-handed hitters. His hard, late-breaking curveball was a power downer with tight rotation at 79-82 mph and produced several swing/miss. Vernon threw his 82-83 mph changeup with good arm speed with late dip and control around the zone. The effort level he normally throws added to the deception and effectiveness of this pitch, allowing it to play above average. Despite his immense size, he fielded his position well and made the plays, including an unassisted putout at first base on a comebacker to his left. As a future reliever in the professional ranks his draft value is likely mid-Day Two, but his stuff during this two-inning look was some of the best I’ve seen so far this summer from the 2020 college pitching class.
