Power / Speed Score
A simple calculation that divides the athlete’s Exit Velocity Max by the athlete’s 60 Yard Dash time for the given event year. For example, 98 MPH / 7.00s = 14.00.
Physical 5-foot-10 210 pound catcher who ran a 7.92 60 (previous best was a 7.54). Offensively- Even setup with some lower half flexion; straight line take back of the hands with a slight barrel tip towards the mound. Showed some punch to center/left center. Balanced approach with decent lower half effort. Exit velocity was a personal best of 87 MPH. Defensively- Upright setup with a slight angle up the 3B line; gains ground with footwork. Adequate transfer, throws stayed on line but with inconsistent carry. Arm strength was 72 MPH with pop times ranging 2.15-2.20. With some fine tuning Bowens can contribute at the right program.
Winter Open (February 26, 2017)
Bowens stands in with a compact/strong 5-foot-10 210 pound frame. He ran a 8.04 60 and 4.59 home to 1B. Offensively- Even setup with bat off back shoulder; coils barrel towards the mound with an up-down stride. Stays behind the ball with an aggressive lower half. Relatively short into the zone with some lift to his pull side; 2-handed to late one hand finish. Exit velocity of 86 MPH (1 MPH improvement from personal best). Defensively- Slightly staggered setup; quick exchange from glove to hand with lead foot trailing off towards 3B; gains ground with a short, across the chest arm action from a 3/4 slot with a peak velocity of a much improved 73 MPH. Pop times ranged from 2.12-2.22. Blocking/receiving can use some fine tuning but the framework is there.
Eastern NY Prospect Preview (August 2, 2016)
Bowens is a filled out, athletic 5-foot-10, 200 pound catcher who ran a 7.76 60 (personal best is 7.54). Offensively- At the plate Bowens sets up in an even stance with weight pre-loaded and bat at a 45 degree angle. Hitches hands down and back during load; floating his front foot with and up-back stride. When on time he was able to show some power potential to his pull side. Stays above the ball, yet levels through the zone. Exit velocity down a notch to 82 MPH (personal best of 85 MPH). Line drive results with some pull side pop potential. Being able to repeat timing will be the key going forward. Defensively- Behind the plate Bowens showed an uptick in his arm strength to 68 MPH with his pop range a bit slower at 2.15 on up. Transfer is quick, sweeping ball back out of his glove. Seemed to have difficulty securing his grip; throws ran up and arm side. Staying low and being aggressive through his finish will help him get back on track with the consistency of his throws. Physical frame and tools are there but in need of refinement.
NY Open ID (January 31, 2016)
DeAndre is a filled out 5-foot-10 185 C/OF who ran a 7.54 60 and a 4.63 home-to-1B. Offensively- DeAndre starts from a slightly spread stance coiling his hands and bat back while taking a up-down stride for timing. Stays back into contact well with some lower half aggression. Swing path varies as hands could use more separation during load to free him up. Mixed contact results (line drives/flyballs/groundballs). Exit velocity up to 85 MPH indicates that their is some untapped juice in his bat. Defensively- In the OF DeAndre was tentative with his approach and had to work to get into a good throwing position. Will need more work in the OF to contribute at the higher levels. OF velocity was 72 MPH. Behind the plate DeAndre was in the 2.07-2.18 range with his pop times but his accuracy and transfer/footwork varied. Showed more of his true athleticism here. Arm strength checked in at 65 MPH. Receives the ball well but will need to tighten up his footwork and release. Has the physical tools in place but lacks the polish right now.
Summer 2015
DeAndre is an extremely well put together and athletic 5-foot-10 170 pounds who with some work could become a front line catcher. Can pop sub 2.1 throws at times as he's very quick with his footwork and transfer. Will need more work in the dirt, receiving and the ins and outs of game calling. Primarily an outfielder now who shows an accurate arm with some carry. Average runner. At the plate he hits from a spread stance with minimal movements. Compact stroke and has started to develop some pop to the left center gap. Intriguing player to watch as he gets better each time we see him.
