6-26-2018: At 5’9/180 pounds, Grace is probably close to being a finished product in terms of his physical development. While he might not be the most projectable pitcher in the league, he is one of the most productive. Average athlete with good strength in his core/lower half. Pitches with a steady, deliberate tempo and good body control. Rotates over his front side very well with good balance. Arm action has a slight hesitation after hand break but everything stays bent and relaxed. Doesn’t wrap the ball behind or get too long on his takeaway. Ball jumps out from his high release point. Finishes all of his pitches with good hand speed. Working primarily out of the pen so far this summer and using a 2-pitch mix. FB is relatively straight but gets on hitters quick. Does a good job of making sure that if he misses his spot, the ball is out of the zone. Doesn’t leave much over the plate. Right now the velocity is below average; 85-88 mph. Given his young age and efficient mechanics, I think it’s reasonable to project that he could sit in the 88-91 mph range when all is said and done. That would make his 74-77 mph CB play up to an even higher level. Presently it’s at least an average pitch. Comes out of his hand with tight spin and good downward plane. 12/6 break travels through the zone with depth and late bite. Biggest reason for his success right now as he can throw it for a called strike or command it just out of the zone when needed. Over 11 IP, Grace has punched out 16 batters to only 3 BB and allowed 4 hits (.143 avg against). Very competitive on the mound. Works quick and goes right after hitters. Keeps things simple and gets the job done. Adding a little bit more velo could go a long way for him. (Dan Jurik)
