Preseason - Downstate (February 21, 2018)

At the plate he uses a wide stance, hands high by back shoulder barrel loose, on the pitch high knee lift, back load for timing, hands direct to the ball on a mostly level path, 84 mph exit velocity off a tee with more projection in the future. Defensively, very wide set up, receives with a wide-open base, quick transfer glove to hand, releases from a high 3/4 slot, pop time of 2.01 to the bag, 74 mph arm strength.

Last Chance Preview- Downstate (November 18, 2017)

Hangan stands in at 5-foot-9 and weighs 160 pounds. His 60 time is 7.60 seconds. Offensively- Hangan has a relaxed stance from the right side, feet a little more shoulder length apart, and the barrel resting just above his shoulder. As the pitch comes in, Hangan has a sound leg kick that comes down a little heavy, but his hips are quick and his hands travel straight through the zone. His hands finish high and the ball appears to travel well to all fields. Prior events showed him as a predominantly pull hitter, but Hangan shows promise with his effortless right-center line drives. Hangan’s exit velocity was recorded at 73 MPH, as he continues to grow and get stronger, he will see his gap power and exit velocity continue to grow. Defensively- As a catcher, Hangan has a promising pop time ranging from 2.00-2.08 and an improved arm velocity of 72 MPH from October of 2016 (up 5 MPH). Hangan has a serviceable transfer which could be quicker with throwing hand staying closer. Feet are angled to start and gains positive ground with his footwork. Throws were accurate with limited carry.

Downstate Fall Preview (October 2, 2016)

Hangan, a 2019 right-handed hitting catcher, stands at 5-foot-6 and weighs a solid 150 pounds, ran a 8.12 60.   Offensively-Begins with a relaxed narrow slightly open lower half. Hands are located slightly above the back shoulder with a pre-pitch bat wiggle. Gets to the launch phase of the swing by picking up the front foot and striding towards the pitcher, while the hands are loaded slightly off the back shoulder. Showed ability, during batting practice, to consistently drive the ball to the pull side gap. Recorded an exit velocity of 75 MPH, but will improve when an adjustment of keeping the hands higher during the approach to the baseball which will result in better extension.  Defensively-  Starts with a primary stance  with a base of feet shoulder width apart. Receives the ball quietly keeping the elbow below the glove and working from outside the ball giving a good presentation while using a shifting technique on balls that are slightly off the plate. Throws to second base showed good carry and accuracy while using a quick transfer from the center of the body keeping the hands at shoulder height. Recorded an arm velocity of 67 MPH and a pop time of 2.08.  Pitching- Starts from the center of the rubber with hands starting in front of the chest. Gets to the gathered position with a leg kick waist high while the hands stay center in front of the chest. Creates early hand separation showing long arm action. Sticks the landing with the lead leg with a good angle not locking the front side. Gets over the front side after the release and has good extension, which could be better if he doesn’t get a bit loose with the front on the way to home plate. Two-seam fastball showed good run to the arm side from a high ¾ arm slot with a top recorded velocity of 73 MPH. Worked both sides of the plate with the fastball staying mostly in the lower third of the zone. Curveball topped out at 68 MPH and showed 11-to-5 action, will get tighter rotation and more bite if he can get better extension on the pitch. Changeup showed good depth and spin, topping out at 66 MPH, a good differential from the fastball. At this point in time, projects more as a catcher at the next level.
