Valentine stands at 5-foot-8, 155-pounds from a smaller build. Pitching- On the mound he uses a slower paced delivery with balance over the rubber. Separates early with ball out of glove, stays on the drive-line as he powers towards home. Arm-action is clean, releases from a high-3/4 slot, fastball rides mostly downhill sitting 74-75 mph (has been up to 78). Curveball 66-68 with gradual 12/6 shape. Throws a split-change that creates some interesting ball spin, 68 mph.
Western NY Prospect Preview (July 5, 2016)
Valentine checks in as a 5-foot-8, 155 pound LHP/OF. He ran a 4.51 home to 1B. Offensively- Starts in an open stance, feet shoulder width apart. His hands tucked in by his back shoulder with his bat resting on his shoulder. He loads by swinging his hands in a circular motion, bring that back below shoulder level. Prior to contact weight is visible shifting to his front foot. Correcting this can greatly improve his power, but he still hit an exit velocity of 77 MPH. Produced fly ball/line drives. Defensively- In the outfield, stays behind the ball; gathers momentum well. He caught the ball on his throwing shoulder allowing for a quick transfer moving into his crow hop. Would benifit from carrying early aggression through his crowhop. Nathan had an arm strength of 75 MPH. Pitching- The lefty sets up with a narrow base on the far right side of the rubber. Moving into a 90 degree leg-kick, Nathan puts his glove and ball hand (separated) behind his back hip with a coil, seemingly trying to hide the ball longer. From there, drives to the plate with an over the top delivery. Nathan’s FB came in at 76-78 MPH with tailing action towards the left handed batter’s box. Had good control of the fastball. Showed a 12-6 curve (70 MPH) but clearly preferred the FB. Also flashed a changeup at 68-69 MPH.
