A fastball with hop has a flat approach angle and visually jumps through the zone. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher swing and miss average. Hop+ of 100 is MLB average.
Fastball

A fastball with sink has low backspin and drops through the strike zone. When thrown down in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher ground ball percentage and lower launch angle. Sink+ of 100 is MLB average.
Fastball
Rise+
A fastball with rise has a high percentage of backspin. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher fly ball percentage. Rise+ of 100 is MLB average
Physical: 5-foot-10, 185 pounds; broad shoulder, muscular frame. 6.91 runner in the 60. Offensively: RHH. Upright stance with some lean backward and bend in the knees, no weight shifted more to either leg; lift and replace with a nice weight transfer to the back leg, moves the hands in the load. Strong turn in the lower half gives him more power to move the upper body quicker as well with downhill bat path with a good bat to ball swing, produces a lot of contact finding the barrel easily. Hit line drives to the opposite field well, occasionally turning on the inside pitch and taking it to the pull side; peak Trackman exit velocity of 84 MPH. Defensively: Bent over and stays low to the ground, stays light on his feet by bouncing around; takes some prep steps and gets to the ball quickly, fielding from flat feet and gaining momentum after he fields. Clean hands with a smooth transfer; long drop out of the glove with a long, over the top slot. INF - 77 MPH. Pitching: Slow leg lift from the stretch but moves easily down the mound with good intent. Quick stab down out of the glove but flips the arm up on time to fire from a high 3/4 slot. FB: Peak velo of 81 MPH, while sitting 80-81 MPH. Peppered his FB all through the zone during his bullpen, plays well at the knees. CB: 71-72 MPH. Tunnels his CB well off his FB with similar slot and arm speed creating a lot of deception in the pitch. CH: 72-73 MPH. Killed the spin on his CH to create depth at the plate, could develop into a quality 2K pitch if he can throw it more.
Oswego (July 25, 2018)
Newman checks in at 5-foot-9 170 pounds. Offensively- Even setup with barrel pointed down behind the back, to level during pre-pitch. Slight leg kick that was getting down a bit late forcing some inside-out contact. Would like to see him be earlier and free himself up to his pull side. Defensively- Athletic defender at 3B, moves well laterally creates angles into the ball and stays through his throws (77 MPH across the diamond). Show some softness to the hands that could also allow for a transition to 2B if need be.
Last Chance Preview (October 14, 2017)
Newman is a 5-foot-9 170 right-handed third baseman with a strong lower half. Offensively- Stands about shoulder width apart, with a slight bend in the knees. Little wiggle of the bat, but hands remain quiet up until the load. Hands drop to chest on load, and keeping them up and stronger would create ability to do more damage. Repeatable efforts that play better than his exit velocity of 66 MPH. Defensively- Angles well to the ball; hanging back a bit long instead of working through. Throws from an over the top arm slot to generate 73 MPH arm strength. 3B/2B mold.
