Stands 6-foot-2, 185-pounds and shows great athletic ability. The junior backstop has above average speed for a catcher and good pop in the bat. Facing a tough Will Frank (Canisius College Commit) of St. Joe's Will was able to rip a line drive triple. Against St. Francis he showed great bat speed driving a ball deep to left center and legging out a triple Uses a balanced setup and a simple load, gets good separation with his hands and maintains a level path through the zone. Shows next level tools across the board.
Preseason All-State (February 28, 2016)
We are starting to see WNY (especially the greater Buffalo area) loaded with some high-end catching prospects in the 2017 class. William Lawrence fits tightly in with several other strong back-stops out of the western side of NY. Lawrence stands 6-foot-2, 185-pounds with a tall athletic build. Offensively- William sets up relaxed with bat resting on shoulder with a limited stride. Shows a short, compact path to the ball with the barrel traveling uphill through contact. He finished with a one hand long finish, balanced. Very athletic swing. Signs of above-average power in the bat with a 91-mph exit velocity. Could even gain some more power with a more active lower half. Defensively-Lawrence threw a 2.0-2.08 pop time. Shows a next-level arm, with a quick, clean transfer. Lawrence is a projectable athlete with speed running a 7.04 60-yard dash; sometimes it's hard to keep an athletic runner with his skill-set behind the plate, could see a move to the OF - but currently, at his position, he's a next-level prospect.
